Grade: 10

Course: Geometry 1 Honors

Standard/Benchmark(s): MAFS.912.G-CO.3.10
Prove theorems about triangles; use theorems about triangles to solve problems. Theorems include:
measures of interior angles of a triangle sum to 180; triangle inequality theorem; base angles of
isosceles triangles are congruent; the segment joining midpoints of two sides of a triangle is parallel to
the third side and half the length; the medians of a triangle meet at a point.

Skills Students should be able to do

Verbs
Prove theorems
Use theorems

Concepts Student should know

Nouns
Interior/exterior angles of a triangle (eg,
Exterior Angle Theorem)
Comparison Property of Inequality
Larger angle lies opposite longer side, and
vice versa
Triangle Inequality Theorem

Critical Area of Focus: Given three lengths, do they form a triangle? If a triangle exists, then
what is the relationship between the length of the sides and the measure of the angles?

Learning Goal: To use inequalities involving angles and sides of triangles, and to understand
why they work.

Essential Question for the lesson: How do we prove triangle inequalities, and use them to find
more information about a triangle?
