ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN KANATA NORTH

A lot is happening now in Kanata North that will add opportunities for employment and
services to the community. I was pleased to attend the opening of the Centre of
Excellence for Next Generation Networks (CENGN) that has located in Kanata North to
help companies working on the future of networking. It will be a catalyst for bringing
more communications technology jobs and businesses here. Underway is construction
of a new building for Sanmina, while Ciena as acquired the new building constructed for
Blackberry and has submitted plans for two 4 storey buildings to create a 1500 person
campus. Other companies like CISCO are hiring. Coming soon is a building for the
Carpenters Union and an outdoor store. With the opening of the outlet mall, many
opportunities for employment have been added to our area.

KANATA NORTH RESIDENTS RECEIVE THE ORDER OF OTTAWA

The Order of Ottawa recognizes exceptional residents who have made a significant
contribution in many fields of endeavour that benefit the residents of Ottawa. Each
year, 15 are selected from those nominated. They will receive the Order at a ceremony
on November 20th at City Hall.
This year two of the recipients are residents of Kanata North. I was pleased that the
person I nominated, Gary Sealey, was chosen to receive this award. As well as being
President of the Beaverbrook Community Association and the representative of the
Federation of Community Associations on City Committees, Gary has founded a
national charity, established Club Moustache, produced a literature festival and worked
on human rights issues. His long history of working to build a better community made
him a well deserving candidate for this award
David Gourlay, who grew up in Kanata and serves with me on the Ottawa Public Library
Board, is another deserving recipient. He is best known for his efforts to return baseball
to Ottawa and as President of the Miracle League of Ottawa, whose goal is to build the
first ever in Canada purpose-built baseball field, playground and recreation hub for
children with special needs. Construction is due to start in 2015. He also served as a
Director on the Ottawa Community Housing Foundation which supports education for
vulnerable youth.

FIRE CHIEF John deHooge

John deHooge has announced that he will be retiring at the end of January after 35
years in fire services, the last five in Ottawa. John and his wife Heather moved into
Kanata North when they arrived in Ottawa and have participated in many community
events. He has given outstanding leadership to the City through initiatives that have
made the service a more inclusive workplace, including a mental health awareness
program, support to including women in the fire service, the week-long bootcamp for
young women to introduce them to the life of a fire fighter, and helping to build an

effective emergency operations team. He will be missed. On behalf of the community I

have sent to John and Heather my best wishes as they embark on their next steps in
life.
