What was the Sepoy Mutiny?


A Sepoy was an Indian
soldier fighting in the
British military
Upset because the
British sealed their rifle
cartridges with beef and
pork fat
Hindus who consider
cows sacred and
Muslims who do not
eat pork were outraged
When several Sepoys
refused to work , the
British arrested them
Sepoy soldiers all over
India rebelled

What was the Sepoy Mutiny?


Sepoys captured the city of
Delhi and the rebellion
spread to many parts in
Northern and Central India
Indians, however, could not
unite because of weak
leadership and a serious
divide between Hindus and
Muslims
The result was that India went
from an economic
imperialism controlled by the
East India Tea Company to a
colony controlled by the
British Empire

movement against
Britain
Developed a principle
of Civil Disobedience
(the deliberate and
public refusal to obey
an unjust law)

Gandhi was famous for
protesting through hunger
strikes, general strikes,
boycotts, and for leading the
Salt March in which he led
thousands of Indians on a
240 mile march to the sea to
retake salt mines from the
British
Gandhis beliefs were the
inspiration for future leaders
such as Martin Luther King,
Jr. and Cesar Chavez

What was the Boxer Rebellion?


Poor peasants and workers
were upset by all of the
privileges given to foreigners
and Chinese Christians who
protected foreign
missionaries
They formed a secret
organization known as the
Boxers
In 1900 they launched an
attack on the European
section of Beijing (the capital
of China)

What was the Boxer Rebellion?


The Empress of China
promised support but did not
back her words with military
aid
The nations of US, Britain,
France, Germany, Russia,
Italy, Austria, and Japan
attacked the Boxers with
20,000 soldiers defeating
them quickly
Despite their loss, the Boxers
inspired nationalism in China
and most Chinese began to
resist foreign influence

Who was Sun Yat-Sen (Sun Yixian)?


Led the overthrow of the
last emperor of China
Became president of the
new republic of China
While only in power for
six weeks, he is
considered the father of
modern China
