Event Reflection #3- Volleyball Match

The third event that I attended at Fossil Ridge High School was the girls
volleyball match between Fossil Ridge and Loveland High. This event took place on
Tuesday, October 7th at the Fossil Ridge High School gymnasium.
I was joined at the match by several of my cohort members, as one of our
other cohort members is the JV coach for the Loveland team. We all felt slightly
conflicted as to which team to route for as we had personal ties to both sides. I
concluded to just cheer for everyone and enjoy the match.
I watched both JV and Varsity games which, all together, lasted from around
5:30-8 pm. The JV match was close with both sides winning a couple games, but
Fossil ending up victorious. The varsity match was much more one-sided, and
although Loveland fought valiantly they were defeated easily by the Fossil team. I
noted the difference in size and talent between JV and Varsity, I dont recall such a
disparity when I played high school sports although Im certain it existed. This
made me consider how important athletics are to some of our students as I was
informed that several girls from Fossil will, more than likely, receive scholarships
and many others will play at the university level.
Being in the gym, watching the fans, and hearing the sounds reminded me of
playing basketball in high school. Swept with vague nostalgia I smiled and enjoyed
watching these students perform outside of the classroom. I look forward to
attending events such as this in the school where I will eventually work.
