VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE
Jumpstart Teacher's Assistant

June 2009
Jumpstart is a program MGHS has during the first weeks of summer for incoming freshman students to
get them acclimated to high school life. My job was to help lead the class in discussions, activities, and
tours, and to serve as a mediator between teacher and student.

Junior Leader
Rutabaga
June - August 2010
Rutabaga is a paddling company located in Madison, WI. In the summer, they provide canoe/kayak
lessons for all ages, as well as week or day long summer school type programs for elementary and
middle school aged children. My job was to help the instructors teach the middle school aged kids the
basics of canoeing and kayaking, helping to get out and put away boats and gear, and serving as another
person to keep an eye on the children and keep them safe.

English Learning Tutor

Presentation Lantern Center (Dubuque, IA)
The Presentation Lantern Center is a place of hospitality geared toward women and children in the
Dubuque area, particularly recent immigrants. One of the main services the Center offers is free English
tutoring, as many of the guests speak little to no English. My job while volunteering here was to help
them work through the books and activities, answer questions, provide examples, and show patience
and compassion.

St. Christophers Orphanage (Suva, Fiji)

April 2014
The orphanage is home to approximately 35 children ranging in age from newborn to 18. My group
would go to spend the day with the kids, playing with them, reading to them, and sharing our cultures
with each other. Though we did not do too much real work beyond reading to them, helping with
homework, and helping with snack time, the Sisters who run the orphanage emphasized how much the
time we spent there meant to the children. `
