DNA polymerases: types and structures, priming reactions, creating
replication fork, semiconservative replication of DNA, synthesis of leading
and lagging strands, Okazaki fragments, termination of replication, telomere
replication.
DNA repair
Damage to DNA, proof reading and repair mechanisms (excision, mismatch,
recombination), SOS response.
Prokaryotic transcription
RNA polymerase: structure, role, promoter recognition, sigma factor,
initiation, elongation and termination.
Eukaryotic transcription
Eukaryotic RNA polymerases: types, promoters, TBP, enhancers and
transcription factors, initiation of transcription, posttranscriptional
modifications of RNA.
Translation
Role of ribosomes and tRNA in protein synthesis, initiation, formation of
peptide bonds, translocation, elongation and termination of protein
synthesis.
Gene regulation
Prokaryotic and eukaryotic genes, operon concept ( lac and trp operon)
