While renovations were conducted on an old worn-down antique store in WinstonSalem, N.C., historical maps of Pulaski were found in the walls of the building. The
building was constructed with double-layered walls, and as one of the workers
pulled one of the walls down, the maps were discovered. The maps date back to
November 1890, and give the current Pulaski residents a look into the unknown
past of their hometown. Assistant Town Manager David Quesenberry and Town
Engineer David Hall went to Winston-Salem to bring the historical documents back
to its roots in Pulaski. The documents date back nearly 125 years and are hand
printed on waxed linen. However, the maps show minimal signs of decay. They are
currently held in the town municipal building between layers of acid free paper
with limited exposure to light. The maps summarize the overview of Pulaski as
well as layouts of the towns plats showing details of alleys that helped with the
planning of the development of the Dunnivant Building project. This has opened
the door for using these documents as an architectural consultant for future
construction and projects. The preservation of the maps is significant for the town
as it sheds light on parts of the towns history, that for a long time, have been
unknown to Pulaskis residents.
