Animal Times
The United States has only won a one
Ryder Cup since 2002. This is a crisis
that all American people want solved.
They are trying to formulate a new
way to choose the captain for future
Ryder Cups so that the Europeans can
stop enjoying the spotlight. A
committee has been formed that
consist of players and past captains to
make the future of America brighter.
John Brightsmock stated Im sick
and tired of hearing the chants OLE
OLE OLE OLE OLE on the T.V.
every two years. It puts me in a worse
mood than I am already in, because
we are usually playing badly and they
are just rubbing it in our faces. As
you can see, the mood around the
United States isnt very good.The
Europeans are taking their newest
victory very well. Who watches golf
is what Alfie Pantaloons had to say. It
is obvious that the Europeans arent
worried about what the Americans are
doing for they have a much more
rounded team than they do, for they
are from more than one country. The
reason why America keeps losing is
actually obvious. They are one
country going up against a continent.
The odds are most definitely in favor
of the continental team. Alfred
Higginbottom believes that America
should take their participation medal
and run, but his American friend says
No! Running is not Americas thing.
Running is EUROPES THING! You
were the ones who ran to America in
both of the World Wars or was it
the other way around?

In any case, America has won

multiple wars that could have torn
their country apart, such as the Yemen
Civil War. Wait, that doesnt sound
right, but my point is that America
doesnt run from things, they stand up
and fight! Apparently that wasnt
Alfreds friend, that was just a random
New Yorker with a good sense of
patriotism. I decided to see what
people around the world thought of
this newly formed committee. Jack
from Australia kept repeating, We
finally won the Masters over and
over again until I got him to stop
talking by telling him that was over
two years ago. Juan from Argentina
asked me when the next World Cup
was, and also said some nasty things
about Cristiano Ronaldo. As you can
see, the rest of the world is very
caught up on their news. I believe that
this committee will make big
improvements. They will be able to
choose the leader that is best for the
team, and that person will know what
to do. They will hopefully be able to
step up to the challenge and get a job
done. The next chance for victory will
be taking place on home soil, so it
gives the Americans the favor that
they most definitely need. Just hope
that you wont hear OLE in two years.

Tempers had started to fray during the

process of deciding what the future of
the farm was going to be. Snowball
was in favor of constructing a
windmill on the farm that would make
all of their work much easier. Of
course Napoleon was opposed to
Snowballs idea. Every time there was
a meeting they would argue. These
two disagreed at every point where
disagreement was possible (62-63).
Snowball, after making all of his
speculations, decided where to put the
windmill and thought that it would
also be a good idea to get electricity to
the farm. He made the point that it
would help them out. After a while
Snowball had all of the plans worked
out, but Napoleon was still opposed to
the plans. It would be a very hard task
to accomplish, but Snowball said that
when it would be complete, there
would only be a three-day week. They
decided that the best way to determine
what was going to happen was to put
it to a vote. The animals formed
themselves into two factions under the
slogan, Vote for Snowball and the
three-day week and Vote for
Napoleon and the full manger(65).
The day came when the animals
would vote. Snowball voiced his
opinions and reasons for why he
thought the windmill should be built,
and then Napoleon stated his reasons
for why he thought it shouldnt be
built. Snowball, enraged after hearing
what Napoleon had to stay, stood up
and started to protest but Napoleon
uttered something and nine dogs came
into the barn and ran straight for
Snowball.

The New Leader

They chased him all the way to the

edge of the farm. He was barely able
to escape their grasp. With Snowball
out of the way, Napoleon was free to
do as he pleased, which was exactly
what he wanted. After his minions
returned, Napoleon set forth the new
rules on Animal Farm. The farm
would be led by the pigs, and
meetings would be cancelled. These
are only a few things that troubled the
animals. They were confused at what
had just happened, and at the same
time they were also scared of the new
law enforcers who were the dogs. This
was the start of a new life around the
farm. It wasnt something that the
animals were in favor of. In fact, they
would have said something if they
could muster up the courage, but they
were too worried about the dogs. The
animals shouldnt have to deal with
this. It is extremely unfair that they
have to answer to Napoleons every
wish, and that they have to be ruled
like this. They dont even get a chance
to voice their opinions because they
are too afraid of what will happen to
them if they do. It isnt right that they
cant express their thoughts and
feelings. Napoleon stated that the pigs
would run the farm, which is against
the dreams of Old Major. He wanted
all animals to be equal, but with
Napoleon, that will most definitely not
be the case. They should come
together, and stand up to Napoleon.

When the windmill was blown down,

the animals didnt know what to think.
Napoleon used this as a way to make
Snowball a enemy. He told the
animals that Snowball destroyed their
work, for he wanted vengeance
against the farm because of his
expulsion. Soon after telling them this,
it was heard that Snowball was
visiting the farm at night. All of the
animals were very frightened, and
Napoleon scouted the farm to see
where the traitor had been. The pigs
then started to make things up about
Snowball. Squealer, being the
persuasive fellow that he was, was
able to make them believe that
Snowball was in league with Jones
from the very start! He was Joness
secret agent all of the time (89).
Squealer also accused Snowball of
trying to destroy the farm at the Battle
of the Cowshed. All of these
accusations were most definitely
untrue. Snowball had never been in
league with Jones, and was actually
given a reward for his bravery after
the Battle of the Cowshed. Hearing
this confused some of the animals
because they remembered Snowball
getting awarded Animal Hero, First
Class, but Squealer had every trick in
the bag. He made up yet another lie,
and told them that he faked everything
during the battle. The animals
believed this partly because the event
happened such a long time ago, and
because of Squealers stories. A few
days later, Napoleon called a meeting.
The animals sensed that something
very bad was about to occur.

Murder on the Farm

Suddenly, Napoleons dogs grabbed

four pigs by the ears. Napoleon told
them to confess to their crimes, and
they stated that they had been talking
with Snowball since he had left, and
that they were also Mr. Jones spies.
After confessing, Napoleon ordered
his minions to rip their throats out.
Napoleon then told anyone else to
confess if they have done anything.
Many animals stepped up and voiced
what they thought they had done.
They were all slain on the spot. And
so on the tale of confessions and
executions went on, until there was a
pile of corpses lying before
napoleons feet and the air was heavy
with the smell of blood, which had
been unknown there since the
expulsion of Jones (93). That was the
scene that all of the animals had to
witness. They had no idea what to
think of what just happened. Barbra
the cow explained what witnessing the
murders was like. I was very scared.
All of these people were my friends,
but I guess they were traitors. I dont
think that they deserved what they got
though. It was a very gruesome
punishment. The real horror to all of
this was that none of the animals had
done anything wrong. For some
reason, they all confessed to crimes
that they hadnt done, and Napoleon
being the terrible leader that he is,
killed them to prove a point. The
animals should not have to feel that
they did something wrong just
because they are afraid of what will
happen. That isnt the right way to
live. They should rebel and overthrow
Napoleon.

Throughout Animal Farm, Squealer

and Napoleon use many propaganda
techniques. One of the techniques that
they used is called education. Its
definition is: If you cant control what
people know its easier to manipulate
them. There are several examples of
this in the story. The Seven
Commandmaents are the laws of the
land, and they promote Animalism
and uphold their beliefs. One of the
laws states that No animal shall drink
alcohol (113). During the beginning
of their freedom, they banned alcohol
because they knew it was bad for you
and muddled with your mind. Later in
the book, the pigs began to drink
alcohol, so they decide to secretly
change the law to No animal shall
drink alcohol to excess (113). Most
of the animals around the farm arent
able to read and arent very smart, so
they think that they just forgot the last
two words. But no, they were actually
changed, which shows the propaganda
technique education. Another
technique that was used in Animal
Farm is scapegoating. Scapegoating is
when one needs an enemy to shore up
support. Squealer uses this technique
multiple times. He is always
persuading the animals to believe
something, such as why the pigs have
started to sleep in the beds. He is
explaining why the pigs need to sleep
in the beds, and uses a statement that
always gets the animals onto his side.
You would not have us too tired to
carry out our duties? Surely none of
you wishes to see Jones back? (80).
He is using Jones, their enemy against
them, and by doing this he gets
support.

Techniques Used

Which is an example of scapegoating.

The most obvious propaganda
technique used in this story is
repetition. The sheep, who are one of
the animals that are not as smart as the
rest, werent able to memorize the
Seven Commandments so they
simplified them into four legs good,
two legs bad. They said this
statement many times throughout the
book to ease situations. Then, as
usual, the sheep broke into Four legs
good, two legs bad! and the
momentary awkwardness was
smoothed over (76-77). That is an
example of repetition in this novel.
Those are a few examples of
propaganda in Animal Farm.
