On Student Athletes

I believe that most student athletes at big schools are not actually students. Rather, I believe
that professional athlete is a more apt description of their role on the college campus. The focus is
clearly not on academic learning. It is heavily focused on athletic performance; and it should be given
the current incentives. At Texas A&M they built a $27 million tutoring facility for their athletes.
Although the tutors are forbidden to take tests or do homework for the athletes, some schools have
crossed that line before. One problem that big sport colleges face is that the students who are entering
their programs are not prepared for the college courses they should be taking.
"So you have squads of tutors and counselors dragging an army of half-asleep athletes from one
classroom to the next," Sack said.
One thing I found odd is that many times, the director of the tutoring center reports to the
athletic director.
