I could get this magazine and Megow HO ear kits at Old Man Guskind's stationary store not far from where I lived but to get other supplies I usually took the bus and ferry to New York. Polk's was located on 7th Avenue near Penn Station upstairs from a Bickford’s Restaurant. Here I was able to get a 99-foot pack of HO brass rail in three foot lengths for only 99 cents. Some stores at this time were charging $2 and $3 for the same rail, so that more than paid for my trip to New York. Polk’s also had rolls of black HO tie strip for about $1.26. Ta already visited out local lumber yard and bought a four by eight sheet of medium tempered hardboard which Thand cut into strips a litle over 2° wide, then beveling the edges. This was my straight roadbed. Curved roadbed could be cut to the desired diameter or the straight roadbed could be slit every fow inches, allowing it to be fanned to any desired radii. The slits would later be covered by stone ballast held in place with water glass, a liquid with sodium silicate in it that was used as a slue or preservative coating back then. ‘The ties in the tie strip were held to- gether by tiny connecting tabs which fit under the rail. The tabs on one side would be snipped when you needed curves. Spikes came in little boxes and were driven home with needle nose pli- ers (hence, “medium” temper hard- board). Rail joiners were of brass. Tt might be mentioned there were several kinds of tie strips. The cheapest were stamped out of thin black paper. It was possible to drive the spikes into the paper ties but the paper would of- ten split so that many modelers pre ferred to drive the spikes into the roadbed but not into the tie strip. Lat er a thicker card stock was used and the manufacturer would add holes for the spikes, RAILROAD MODEL CRAFTSMAN, I ‘was a kid in high school when the Laying track by hand was tedious but we didn’t mind it. That's what you did to get track. Hobby shops had small cast-metal track gauges which kept the rails in gauge even on curves. Some modelers used track laying machines which used escutcheon pins rather than spikes and could drive in four pins atone time, Midlin Models, of Scotch Plains, N. J., had developed a more sophisticated track system. Their HO rail had the same shape as regular HO rail but in addition had a smaller rail head built into the bottom. This web was driven into genuine wooden ties. Some of the early HO narrow gauge pioneer model- ers quickly realized that the bottom of the Midlin track more closely approxi- mated narrow gauge rail if they would enlarge the slots in the ties. Developments came quickly in those pre-war years. Megow in Philadelphia developed rubber roadbed. Scale 0 gaugers used wood ties and hand-dri- ven spikes with roofing paper to simu- late ballasted roadbed. (Hey, it worked!) Most O scale modelers contin- ued to use outside third rail for current pickup even after World War Il ended. Outside third rail had disappeared from HO and 00 with development of the two rail electrical system in the mid-thirties. Flexible track, code 70, and 83 rai nickel silver, and many brands of ready, to use track were still to come in the years following World War II. Still, 'm glad my first railroads had hand laid track. It’s much like being glad your first auto had stick shif. Bridge details I started my railroad career on a B&B gang for Santa Fe (San Joaquin Valley) in 1977 and always had a fasci- nation with railroad bridges, especially wood trestles. Because of this I really enjoyed Dave Lambert's article on fire protection for wooden bridges in the October issue. It is great that you cover the prototype practice and not just have an article on “building model trestles.” ‘A couple of items crossed my mind when reading the piece. When I worked for the Santa Fe the trestles were designated as BDWP (Ballast Deck Wood Pile) and ODWP (Open Deck Wood Pile). Therefore, I always thought of these as different types and not both open decks, as the ballasted one is not truly open on top. Also, as to the cause of bridge fires, we had several set by fishermen’s campfires. I guess there is something nice about fishing under a railroad bridge by firelight Fresno, California In connection with the artiele, “Fire Protection on Open Deck Bridges” in the October RMC, I offer the enclosed photograph of a different example. ‘This was on the Chicago & Illinois Midland Railroad in the wetlands area surrounding a crossing of the Sanga: mon River in Iinois, Note the arrangement of the water barrels along the bridge timbers, with: out protective railings, the barrels lit erally perched alongside the deck. Barns As I was reading and enjoying the September issue, I felt some comments from north of the border might be ap- preciated. Being a farm boy myself, Tim Higgs’ article was very welcome, as was the EDITOR'S NOTEBOOK commentary. I get a little depressed when I seen one of those great old barns being demolished or falling down upon itself. The mod- ern sheds that house livestock (they shouldn't be called barns) are like the modern industrial buildings: no style, just cookie cutter design On a lighter note, for modeling a barn one might also want to consider Sylvan Scale Models’ “Barn with Si- los” for an eastern barn with a stone foundation. Aaa ei ‘nse ia Cant HORIZEN- ©70 Prototype: Also, if any readers are wondering ‘how those large barns were built, what they looked like inside, or what types ‘of wood were used, I would suggest a copy of the book, Barns of the Queen’s Bush, by Jon Radojkivic, available from the publisher, Brucedale Press, at ‘www/bmts.com/-brueedale. ‘The Queen’s Bush was the mid-nine- teenth century term for the prese day Bruce and Grey counties in On- tario, Canada, where the barns in this, book are located ‘To get back to a railway theme, this publisher also carries John R. Hardy's Rusty Rails, which is a book containing his photographs and memories of the former CN and CP rail lines in the same area of Ontario. In the “Laser Guide” supplement, I would like to add another Ontario- based company, Osborn Model Kits (www.osbornmodelkits.com), STEVEN HOSHEL via e-mail Splatter alert don’t write to editors but this time I must make an exception. The problem is that whatever you do, when raising the mixer out of the paint do not have your thumb near the power button. Press- ing it tends to create all sorts of inter- esting designs on clothes, desks, walls and other models. I will not go into the how's or why's that have led me to this knowledge but will just pass it on. WILLIAM (BILL) MC KNIGHT Warrensburg, Missouri CO, T was very alarmed by the lack of safety precautions mentioned for air- brushing with CO. in “Notes on Air- brushing” in the October, 2008, issue. While the author is correct, CO, is used for carbonation in drinks, the statement that CO2 is not going to harm you cannot be further from the truth, Carbon dioxide may cause as- phyxia if released in a closed room, and being heavier than air, it displaces ‘oxygen when it colleets in low-lying ar- eas. A Docksider is a shoe (from LL Bean, I believe). The engine, prototype and model, is a “Dockside.” (An original model, complete with box, resides at the local hobby shop.) Whatever it is called, Mr. Littlefield did a terrific job. HAL KATTAU via e-mail Ann Arbor T thoroughly enjoyed the August 2008 issue of RMC. Two articles which Tespecially found interesting and valu- able were “Ann Arbor Revisited” by Kristian Foondle and the WI&M Ry. piece by Thomas Hillebrandt. I enjoyed Mr. Foondle's description of the process by which he developed the theme for his layout, including the background research he did on the Ann Arbor Railroad, Although I don't have a particular desire to model the AA, I found the de- scriptions of his process for focusing on & manageable “chunk” of an interest- ing railroad and modeling it in a rela- ly small size to be very helpful. Mr. Foondle’s modeling skills are to be commended, as well. It was difficult to tell from the photos that his layout was really in N scale and not in HO or a larger scale. Regarding the WI&M article, Mr. Uillebrandt provided a concise and in. teresting description of railroading in a part of the country not often covered by other modelers, yet offering opera- tional possibilities in, again, a relative- ly small space that could keep an oper- ating session interesting for several hours A book recently published on_the WI&M, “The White Pine Route,” by ‘Thomas B. Berg, gives an in-depth his- tory of the Wi&M, but Mr. Hille- brands article fils in where Berg left off, focusing on the later operations in the 1970's and the 1980's. His “small” track plan just fits in my “train room” and Til probably incorporate many of the features contained in this plan in my own layout.
