ANALYSIS OF TWO

TWO-DIMENSIONAL
DIMENSIONAL TRUSS
AIM :
To analyze and visualize the effects of forces on 2D Truss.
DIAGRAM :

TRUSS SPECIFICATIONS :
Length of elements are 4m (horizontal) and 4.0311m (inclined).
Force equal to 400KN is applied at each of the nodes 2,4 and 6.
Truss is supported by a crank at node 1 and roller at node 2.
Cross-sectional
sectional area of the elements is 3250 mm2.
E = 200 GPa

ANALYSIS OF TWO-DIMENSIONAL TRUSS

ANALYTICAL APPROACH :
Both horizontal and vertical forces are at joint A. Only vertical
component is at B.
Since there is no horizontal force Ax =0.
By Symmetry
Ay =By
Ay + By =(400)3=1200
Ay =600KN
Considering Joint A :

150.255

90

119.744

By Sine rule
FAC/sin(150.255) = Ay(600k)/sin(119.744) = FAE/sin(80)
FAE=691.0445903 KN
FAC=340.8553724 KN
Considering Joint E :

ANALYSIS OF TWO-DIMENSIONAL TRUSS

FEC = cos(29.744)+400K
= FACcos(29.7448813)
FEC = 230.34414 KN
FEF = (FAE + FEC)cos(60.2551187)
FEF = 457.1368302
Considering Joint C :
FEC
FAC

FCD
FFC

FEC = FFC = 230.3441475 KN

2 FFC cos(60.2551187) + FAC = FCD
FCD = (230.3441475)(2)cos(60.255)+342.855
FCD = 571.420774 KN

ANSYS ANALYSIS :
DIAGRAM :
In the software we build a model of the truss with the above
mentioned specifications and provide the forces at different
nodes.

Ansys automatically gives us the force and stress analysis as

below

FORCE ANALYSIS :

Force in each member is generated by ansys and displayed

against the member as in the above image.
Here negative sign represents compressive force and positive
sign represents tension force.

COMPARISION :
Values from analytical approach and using ansys are almost the
same , the slightest differences are due to the deflections in the
elements (which is considered in ansys analysis and neglected
in analytical calculations)
