IMPULSEMOMENTUM

THEOREM

When a net force acts on a

object, the impulse of the
net force is equal to the
change in momentum of
the object.
F t=mvf - mvi

The units of impulse and

momentum are equivalent
[Ns=kgm/s].
The impulsemomentum
theorem is logically
equivalent to Newton's
second law of motion (the
force law) F=ma.

Formula in finding the

impulse
J=mvf-vi
Formula in finding the
force
F=impulse/ t

Example in impulse
A cart with a mass of 1.1 x
10^3 kg is moving with a
speed of 1.7 x 10^2 m/s.
The impulse required to
bring the car to rest is?

Solution:
J = P = mv
Given:
m = 1.1 x 10^3 kg
vi= 1.7 x 10^2 m/s
vf= 0.0 m/s
J = 1.1 x 10^3 kg x (0.0 m/s 1.7 x 10^2 m/s)
J = -1.87 x 10^5 N s

Example
What is the impulse of car 'A' during the
collision?
Given:
J = mv = m vf-vi
m = 2000kg
vi = 8m/s
vf = -4m/s
J = 2000kg(-4m/s-8m/s)
J = 2000kg(-12m/s)
j = -24000N s

Example in impulse and

force
Hitting a baseball:
(a)Find the impulse
(b) Find the force

Solution
(a)
Given:
M=0.14kg
Vi=-38m/s
Vf=58m/s
t=1.6 x 10^3 s
J=mvf-vi
J=0.14kg[58m/s-(-38m/s)]
J=0.14kg(96m/s)
J=13.44kg m/s

(b)
Solution:
F=j/t
Given:
J=13.44kg m/s
t=1.6x103 s
F=?
F=13.44kg m/s /1.6x10 3 s
F=0.084kg m/s or N
