THE WORSTJHENE AIKO

NARRATIVE
The basic story line for my music video will involve a
dysfunctional relationship, between a neglected female and
cheating/absent man. It will follow the emotional struggle
she goes through and the dysfunctional attachment she
has to someone who constantly hurts her. Although
dysfunctional relationships are not common overall in
relationships so I'm subverting a normal relationship, I will
enforce the stereotypes of a dysfunctional relationship as in
these circumstances the female usually is vulnerable and
emotional while the male is dominant and has power and
control over the partner. Most R&B videos which discuss
relationships or heartbreak are usually ambiguous without
a clear plot/storyline as they focus on the lyrics therefore
I've intentionally decided to focus on my artists emotions
and not on a sophisticated clear story.
I intentionally have not watched the original video created
by Jhene Aiko as it wanted to focus on my own
interpretation through the lyrics and not be influenced

INSPIRATIONS
I have taken some inspiration from the R&B video
Broken Hearted Girl by Beyonc which I will
incorporate and reference into my video. When my
artist is walking alone through the city, I will edit the
shot to black and white which will highlight her sad
emotions and loneliness, like in the Broken Hearted
Girl video. In the video when Beyonc is happy and
has overcome her ex the shot is in colour which
connotes happiness and breaking free from her past.

MISE EN SCENE
Due to the fact the genre of my song is R&B, I will adhere to
the female conventions women usually portray by using Laura
Mulveys male gaze. My artist will wear a long sleek red dress
and red lipstick. However, I will only use this convention in the
first half of the music video, when the artist is weak and
vulnerable after being stood up. I will subvert this convention,
when my artist gains some sort of power; she will wear all
black, leggings, a turtle neck, black boots and beanie. The fact
shes all covered up and is wearing black will connote a sense
of mystery which will give the artist authority and power.
R&B music videos which focus on heartbreak such as Take a
Bow by Rihanna and Broken Hearted Girl by Beyonc, usually
focus on the lyrics and do not wear gimmicky outfits and have
outlandish narratives, therefore I have chosen only two outfits,
which are everyday outfits the average person will actually
wear. This may help the audience relate with the artist and
lyrics more as they appear like normal people in the music
video. The Uses and Gratification theory of Personal Identity

The two costumes in my music video will be

similar to these outfits.

TARGET AUDIENCE
The Target Audience for my music video will be predominately
females from age 16-30 because during these ages people are
finding themselves and may go through dysfunctional
stages/relationships in this part of their lives. The target audience
will also be people who enjoy the R&B genre of music. The
dominant gender demographic will be females as the artists is a
female and its in her perceptive so therefore it will be more
relatable for female listeners.

LOCATION
The locations in my shoot will involve a house living room
setting and a populous, crowded area of the city. I chose a
living room to create a realistic and homely atmosphere.
This may grip the audience as it will highlight how
common flawed relationships are, as it can occur to
anybody due to the typical setting. The crowded location,
possibly near an iconic London setting will highlight how
alone the protagonist is.
