Heat Energy

Introduction
Junior Science

Heat Energy
Heat is a form of energy produced by the
motion of molecules that make up a
substance.
The faster the molecules move, the more
heat they produce and the higher the
temperature.
Heat energy will cause objects to expand,
contract or change state.

Heat
Heat is also known as thermal energy.
The amount of heat in a substance depends
on
Temperature
Mass
The substance itself

Temperature
Temperature is a measure of average kinetic
(moving) energy of the particles within an
object.
The temperature of an object is to do with how
hot or cold it is, measured in degrees Celsius,
Fahrenheit or Kelvin
A thermometer is used to measure the
temperature of an object

Importance of Temperature
Knowing the temperature of things can be very
important.
Whether measure illness, whip up candy, or
attempt scientific testing a thermometer is a very
useful device.
In lab testing, precise measurements of
temperatures maybe required , to maintain
integrity of experiments.

Heat vs. Temperature

Temperature is a measure of average kinetic
(moving) energy of the particles within an object
measured in degrees Celsius or degrees Kelvin.
Heat is the transfer of energy from a hot region to a
cooler region measures in joules.
80oC

10kg Water

20kg Water

Both are at the same temperature but B has twice as much heat energy

Heat vs. Temperature

Summary
Temperature is a measure of speed (kinetic energy) of
the particles within an object.
It is the hotness of a body measured in degrees
Celsius or degrees Kelvin.
Temperature is measured using a thermometer.
Heat is the transfer of energy from one object to
another measures in joules.
Heat always travels from hot regions to cold regions.
