Figaredos Bistro in Abingdon, Virginia

President Maureen Moffet opened our meeting by welcoming everyone to our

November meeting. She introduced our speaker, Veita Lyle, and Carol Sims
guest, Dee Hopkins. Were hopeful that Dee will transfer her membership to
our group soon. There were 30 members in attendance. We were asked to
remember the IOTA State 80th birthday on November 29. Help is needed to
make a 12x12 scrapbook page about our chapter to be sent in by the state
convention. Maureen also reminded us to use her cell number if we need to
contact her because her landline has been disconnected. Remember Mary
Sue Smith who recently lost her mother. Thelma Wright is reportedly doing
well at the Hermitage.

The Thought for the Day was given by Cindy Brewer. She distributed new
pencils to everyone with a wonderful message called The Parable of the
Pencil. It was a special reminder to us that we need to remember the five
important simple truths for our lives to give us focus.
The program was enthusiastically presented by Veita Lyle, a teacher and the
vice-president on the board of CAC, Childrens Advocacy Center of
Bristol/Washington County of Virginia. She shared that it is not a preventative
program, but working with presently abused children in the area. They offer
programs in court school, Happy Bear, internet safety, work in jail/detention
centers, pregnancy/child care, Circle of Friends and camp support and even
have a dog named Nomad who helps. Everyone was reminded that we too
can help by reporting suspected abuse, supporting others, volunteering time,
speaking out and making donations. In lieu of a thank you gift, a donation of
$80 was given in Veitas name to the Center. She expressed her thanks for
our donation and the personal hygiene products everyone brought.
The business meeting was called to order.
Octobers minutes were read, approved and passed. Treasurer Brenda
Bingham reported that as of October 31, our checking account balance was
$8114.75 and the savings account balance was $1097.37. All dues are paid
up. Stamps Sewell, our corresponding secretary, read thanks you notes from
Sandra Jonas for her gift, Ruby Rogers for her pendant, and Kaitlyn Woffard
for her new teachers goodie bag.

Debbie Miller reported for Kathy Musick on the Scholarship Committee that
there are funds available for applications: $1000 for a current female
education student, $1000 for a Delta Gamma state award, and $100 (maybe
2) stipend for classroom supplies. She reminded us to take advantage of
these wonderful scholarships. The deadlines are on our website.
Kathy Laster reported for the Finance Committee about our needed
requirements from the state to set our goals and responsibilities.
Stamps Sewell encouraged everyone to reach out and draw more members
to our organization.
Sarah Ellis reported that our rules are presently updated.
Carol Propst reminded us about Quarters for Headquarters and saving our
used jewelry for the states fundraiser.
Carol Sims reported on the International and Outreach Committee that goals
are being set, that we will continue supporting Schools for Africa and our
monthly projects. Lois Quillin won the nature basket from the October
meeting. We will be bringing unwrapped gifts for the Toys for Tots project in
December.
Sandra Jonas, Lois Quillin, and Maureen Moffet attended the Southwest
Coordinating Council meeting on October 15th, in Meadowview. Planning is
underway for the joint meeting with Chi Chapter which will be on April 11th,
at 11:00, in Marion.
It was moved and approved that we make Thelma Wrights dues payment.
Sadly, Kathy Laster is moving, but a motion was made to table naming a
replacement since shell finish out the year with us. The motion was
seconded and passed on a voice vote.
The meeting was adjourned and after sharing the collect, we all enjoyed
fellowship and a wonderful lunch. The December meeting will be our
Christmas Social at 10:30 at the Bristol Virginia School Board Office on
December 6.
Respectfully submitted,
Linda Strutner
