Unit 2 Quiz Directions

Step 1:
-Create a figure with at least 8 coordinate points. It can be an octagon, it can be a letter of your
name, it can be just a random shape. See the lesson for an example.
-Plot the coordinates on a coordinate plane, you can use grid paper or GeoGebra.

Step 2:
-You will transform you figure 3 times, a translation, a reflection, and a rotation.
*Translation: make up a rule for translation and perform the translation on the coordinate
plane.
*Reflection: choose which rule you want to use, I suggest choosing one of the follow for your
line of reflection: x-axis, y-axis, y=x
*Rotation: choose which rule you want to use, I suggest choosing one of the following for your
rotation: 90 clockwise, 90 counterclockwise, or 180.

Step 3:
Answer the following questions:
1. What rule was used for the translation?
2. A vector is a mathematical object that has direction and magnitude. What is
another way you can describe and define a translation?
3. Which line is your image reflected across?
4. How does the distance from one point of the pre-image to the reflection line relate
to the reflected image point? Is this relationship true for all reflections? How do
you know?
5. How many degrees was your image rotated and in which direction?
6. How can a rotation be described?
7. Explain how a shape can look the same after being rotated.
You already have your answers for #1, #3, and #5 from Step 2.
For the rest of the questions, here are some helpful hints:
#2: use your notes and describe what a translation is (there is another word)
#4: use your notes and describe what you know about each point of the pre-image and
its corresponding point of the image
#6: use your notes and describe what a rotation (there is another word)
#7: use your notes and look at what happens if you continue to make rotations around
the origin
