Linear and circular DNA, Single-stranded and

Most prokaryotic organisms have


a closed circular double-stranded
DNA, i.e., their DNA essentially
has no ends. It assumes a twisted
shape and is termed type I. Type II
DNA is rare in nature; the DNA
chains have a break, thus
eliminating the twist. The nuclear
DNA of eukaryotic organisms is a
linear double-stranded DNA (type
III) with two ends. DNA shape in
nature is a major difference
between prokaryotic and
