FOTOgramas Project: Second Grade Photo-Journal

Dear Parents,
This term, the second grade students have been reviewing what they know about
rooms in a house, furniture, clothing, and action verbs: Yo como en la cocina.
(I eat in the kitchen) Mi mam lleva un vestido rojo. (Mi mom wears a red
dress). They will soon learn adjectives to describe themselves and then their
family members. Yo soy deportista. Mi mam es cariosa.
Using this vocabulary as the basis for their work, students will begin creating their
own photo journals, en espaol. With that in mind, I would like students to take
pictures at home, of themselves and of their family members.
Together in class, we will paste them into books that I will provide, and then
describe what's in the picture in Spanish. For example, students might take a
picture of themselves on their bed and label it "I read in my bedroom - Yo leo en
mi dormitorio," or they might take a picture of their dog, "Mi perro se llama
Spot y duerme en el salon. (My dogs name is Spot and he sleeps in the living
room.)
These journals will document the language the students have acquired in class,
and it will give them a chance to show off what they know. This will be an ongoing project to be worked on and added to throughout the rest of this trimester. I
will remind the students to take pictures at home and we will work on putting the
journals together in class.

Please help your child in taking the pictures at home (not on a Spring Break
trip), and then the developing or printing out of the photographs. I want the work
to be intentional and orchestrated by the students, so please do not let your
second grader bring in photos you already have on hand at home. We want them
to think about the different ways they can "use" their Spanish.
Photos should come to school well labeled in an envelope or plastic bag. I will
have a drop off spot outside the Spanish classroom.
It is my hope that students will begin bringing in photos as soon as possible. I
plan to have our first in-class photo journal
workday on Wednesday, March 20th.
For your convenience, this letter will also be posted on my website
(http://spanish244.weebly.com/). Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have
any questions.
Mil gracias,
