DELAYED
CRACKS
The lowest strength steels used in shipbuilding are ABSA, ABSB, and ABSC.
De-
layed cracking wont occur in welds involving only these steels so they can be
welded without any special precautions, other than good welding practice.

These precautions eliminate or minimize the three factors that cause delayed cracking.

Inter-
Preheat and interpass temperatures usually fall into the range of 75-2500F.
The
temperature actually used, however, will be governed by the steel composition and
thickness.
If these steels
cool too slowly after welding, they will lose strength and toughness.
Since
preheating acts to slow down this cooling rate, these steels mustnt be preheated
too high.
