Surface Area of a cylinder

Objective: Be able to calculate the

surface area of a cylinder
Surface area of a cylinder
• Imagine a cylinder
opened out Circle

Rectangle

Circle
Surface area of a cylinder
C=πd
or 2πr

2πr
h h

Area of the rectangle is length x width

= 2πr x h
= 2πrh
Surface area of a cylinder
A=πr2

Area of the each ‘end’ is πr2

So area of both circles is 2πr2
Surface area of a cylinder

πr2

2πrh

Total surface area is2πrh + 2πr2 πr2

Surface area of a cylinder
5 cm
Find the surface area of a cylinder
of radius 5 cm and height 10 cm
10 cm
• Area of rectangle = 2πrh
= 2 x 3.14 x 5 x 10
= 314 cm2
• Area of two ends = 2πr2
= 2 x 3.14 x 5 x 5
= 157 cm2
2 x 3.14 x 5 cm
10
cm
• Total surface area is 2πrh + 2πr2
• Total surface area = 314 + 157
5 cm
= 471 cm2
