First Grade Fluency

Fluency is doing a skill easily and accurately. Now that we are in the 4th and final quarter of First Grade, it
is important that your student practices earlier skills quickly and accurately. This helps skills to become more
automatic and demonstrates your childs understanding (shows what they know).
In Literacy, being fluent means reading at an appropriate speed and putting words and phrases together.
Errors should be caught and corrected by the student. It also means reading our weekly words quick as a snap.
In Math, being fluent means knowing addition and subtraction Math facts. First graders should know these
facts without using strategies, tools, or their fingers. Practicing and memorizing their facts will help them to be
successful in Second Grade and beyond.
