B. REVIEW
Who can recall what our topic last meeting was?

Last meeting weve discuss

About linear equation in one
Variable.

Very good!
C. PRESENTATION OF LESSON
Now, this morning we will going to discuss about
Cartesian coordinate system/ plane.
Who has an idea of what Cartesian coordinate system
is?

Cartesian plane is all about X

And Y axes.

Thats right!
Basically, Cartesian coordinate system is a coordinate
system that specifies each point uniquely in a plane by a
pair of numerical coordinates, which are the signed
distances from the point to two fixed perpendicular
directed lines, measured in the same unit of length.

Students listen attentively

Now, who can guess who discover the Cartesian

coordinate plane?

Rene Descartes

Yes, absolutely right!

How did Rene Descartes discover the Cartesian
coordinate plane? Any idea?

No idea sir

Okay, Rene Descartes is a French Mathematician

who discover the Cartesian coordinate plane in the
17th century. Accordingly when he was young, he got
sick and because of that incident, his professor let
him take a rest for that day. While lying in his bed, he
noticed a fly crawling in his ceiling. Then he also
noticed that the ceiling is like a graphing paper for it
has different lines arrange horizontally and vertically.
Upon his curiosity he observed keenly the fly and draw
the location of the fly as the fly changes its location. He
watched the fly for a long time. He wanted to know how
to tell someone else where the fly was. Finally he
realized that he could describe the position of the fly by
its distance from the walls of the room. When he got
out of bed he wrote down what he had discovered. Then
he tried describing the positions of points the same way
he described the position of the fly. Thats how Rene
Descartes discover the Cartesian coordinate plane.

Students listen attentively

Now, Cartesian coordinate system/plane is composed

of different parts.

Who has an idea of what are the parts of Cartesian

coordinate sytem/plane?

X and Y axes

That is right!
The horizontal line is what we called the x-axes or
the abscissa which is the first variable, while y-axes
or ordinate is the second variable.
Basically, Cartesian coordinate system is composed
of 4 different quadrant. Namely quadrant l, ll, lll, and lV.
Starting in the upper right quadrant by moving counter
clockwise.

Students are listening

In quadrant l, all x and y-values are positive, in

quadrant ll, x is negative and y is positive, in quadrant lll,
all values are negative, and only x is positive in quadrant
lV y is negative.
Now, what do you call the point of intersection between
the x and y-axes?

Origin

Very good!
Origin has a coordinate (0,0).
Okay, who
can go to the board and create a cartesian coordinate
plane with its corresponding label of its parts?

One student is constructing/

creating a Cartesian
coordinate plane with
corresponding label

Very good!
Now, since we already know the different sign to which
a certain point is located. Lets have an example.
Given point (1,5) where could we locate this in our
Cartesian coordinate plane?

Quadrant l

That is right!
How about (-2,1)

Quadrant ll

Correct!
(-2,-2)

Quadrant lll

Good!
(2,-1)

Quadrant Lv

Absolutely right!
So, any question?

None sir

Okay, lets have an activity.

So, we will divide the class into two groups.

Form a circle each group. I have here a crown,
and base on the ancient time, whoever wears a
crown shall be consider as wise and knowledgeable.

Each group are listening

carefully

Direction: As I play a music you should pass the

crown and as I stop the music whoever holds the
crown should go to the center of the circle and wear
the crown and I will show a card containing a point.
All you need to do is to determine which quadrant the
point in the card is located. Answer as fast as you can.
The first person who gives the correct answer will gain
the point in their group. The first group who gain 5 points
shall be declare as the winner.
Am I understood?

Yes sir

The winner is group 1/ 2. So here is your prize.

Yehey

D. VALUES INTEGRATION
Always remember that Accuracy is very important in every step that we make in our
lives.
lV. EVALUATION
Direction: in a sheet of paper answer the following:
A. What is Cartesian coordinate system?
B. Construct/ create a Cartesian coordinate plane and label its parts.
C. Determine which quadrant does the following points are located:
1. (5,1)
2. (0,0)
3. (-1,-1)
4. (1,0)
5. (0,-1)
V. ASSIGNMENT/HOMEWORK/AGREEMENT
Study in advance on how to find the slope of the points.
