The Way of Space Controls Peoples Ways of Doing
The 1984 and Foucault is a book talking about how space can control the way
people thinking and doing depending on the surrounding people are at. These two titles
have something in common on how someone and something can control peoples way of
doing such as putting the peoples lives in danger. The 1984 is a great way to let people
know how space can control peoples life such as the telescreen and Big Brother poster and
other set of materials of Big Brother revolving around the place. Winston one of the main
characters was one of the cautions one about Big Brother and the telescreen. How the
television had to be on and never turn off because the television was a hiding camera and
watch every person moves or anything the people keeps secrets hiding from the Big
Brother. Around the town or place Winston was living in was being watch 24 hours a day
keeping everyone watched such as cameras. Winston was trying to discover how to destroy
and also escape from this madness from Big Brother. Winston no longer wants to be watch
and control from Big Brother and wants to set free and enjoy life without being paranoid of
being watch on cameras, people, telescreen, and Big Brother posters. As Foucault it is about
how people are being controlled by the govern and being watched all times. By the govern
controlling the people around the town they set up rules so he/she cannot do. Also without
following the rules the people in the town will put their lives at risk. The point is each space

that surrounds the people gives out the way of thinking and doing making them get control
over.
Within the Library in Cal State University Northridge there is a good source space
in classes that make use of the library such as employees and students. The library does not
have a limit of who can enter or not as long as youre a student from CSUN. Though there
are some rules we must follow, such as not entering in a room that only employee can only
enter. For example, people who assist students for information from the behind of the table
students dont have the right to go there because it is forbidden. There are certain areas that
students cannot enter because of the classes (students or employees) they are at.
The Library is a kind of place of concentration, quietness, and learning and even
relaxation. Each of the environments gives some kind of space and feeling. In the article
Strategic Development of University Library Space. . . By Graham Mathews; Graham
Walton say that the all libraries give out people minds of way of thinking that the library is
a place of informal learning space; that was the case of study that provided in the university
library. The library is a nonviolent space because of the relaxation of space gives out to the
students.
Upon analyzing the individual floors at Csuns Library I noticed that the first floor
has noise, while the other set of floors do not have noise such as the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. The
first floor is livelier and is most often to chill or meet with groups to talk about homework
or any other school related activities. While I was entering I saw a small mini store that
sells coffee and other pastries to my left and to my right I saw bunch of chairs to sit and
drink your hot nice coffee with your yummy pastries. The small mini coffee shop is

basically trying to capture some customers attention by making them buy by attracting
them with the nice smell of coffee before the go any further in the library. By walking
further into the first floor passing the small coffee shop I saw to my left help assistances if a
students needs help with how and where to go on a specific floor they needed to go which
is a good location because the students will know right away. By passing by the help
assistances booth, there is a small group of computers to your right, and to your left you see
a bunch of chairs to sit and read or study. In the library, there are other doors that lead
students to another computer lab and with moreof chairs, and with the CSUNs schedule of
the CSUNs sport games, group, and events on a television. This whole atmosphere of the
first floor inside the CSUNs library is lively and has a better chances talking a little bit
louder in the other couple of floors. While I was entering the first floor I see students
chatter and full of energy while going upstairs its serious and quite. While checking the
second floor and seeing how completely different atmosphere is compare to the first floor
such as there quietness and little a bit lonely some depending on the time. The second floor
is more likely for students who want to stay focused in order to maintain and have better
concentration. By walking on the second floor were chair present immediately in order to
start studying right away. There is also a set of rules on the second floor such as no
cellphones and no talking too loudly. The third floor also had setoff classrooms studying
separate studying rooms for groups on every subject with a white board to help write down
information. The only difference the third floor has from the first and third floor is it has a
big room section named the LRC (Learning Resource Center). The LRC is a place that
helps students with any subject they are having a problem with. The fourth floor also has a
study hall kind of the some just like the second floor.

Between the 1984 and Foucault has a connect of the space I choose which is the
library of Cal State University Northridge is how they both control the people by keeping
them silent. For example, having set of rules within the library on different areas and where
the students have to keep silent and not to bring like cellphones. Basically every area has a
set of control of people because the people know following the rule wont lead them on
getting in trouble just like 1984; Winston had to watch and keep in the lead on following
some of the rules for he will not get caught. But some of the rules could be helpful to
control from getting people in trouble like no texting while driving without having some of
rules set into this society people will go madness. Rules can help people set on track though
it doesnt mean is right to overpower the rules and for your own use. Such as in the Michel
Foucault. Discipline & Punish (1975), Panopticism by Alan Sheridan for example, It is a
segmented, immobile, frozen space. Each individual is fixed in his place. And, if he moves,
he so at the risk of his life contagion or punishment. The meaning of this example is
saying that the people must follow the rules and do as the govern please or the people will
get killed.
This is important subject matter to let people noticed that all space can have
different ways of controlling peoples thoughts and doing just by the way the building is
structure. Space can also have a way of being disturbing just like in the book 1984 and
Foucault. These two authors of those book (1984 and Foucault) is basically telling that
space can be really controllable and every disturbing if you pay close attention. Space can
also give out different atmosphere such as happiness, sadness or more. Just by paying more
attention to the space you are surrounded by you will noticed that different concepts around
with people and feelings.
