Project of Study: Grocery Store

Rational for choosing this topic:

The grocery store, The Brick Street Market, recently opened in Bondurant.
This is the only grocery store in town and would possibly be within walking
distance from the school. (However, there is no sidewalk so I dont know if
we would be allowed to walk there) Teachers know a lot of the people
working there and we would be able to get materials and speakers easily.
This is something that the children have been talking about and since the
opening of the store all of the students have been there at least once.
Key Questions to be asked/answered-How many of you go shopping for food with your parents?
-Who works at the grocery store? What do they do?
-Where does the food come from?
-What are the different departments at a grocery store?
-What can you buy at the grocery store?
-How much money do things cost?
Plans to document Student Learning-Graph for what department different food items go in
-grocery lists
-jobs at the grocery store charts
-making a grocery store class book
-drawing a map of the Brick Street Market
-engaging in sociodramatic play at the grocery store dramatic play center

A Letter to Families about our Study of Grocery Stores

We have recently noticed that the students are very interested and
excited about the opening of a grocery store in our town! We will be
starting a Project of Study about Grocery Stores.
We would love your help to gather some materials to support of study.
Please label items with your name on them if you would like them back
at the end of the study. We promise to take good care of them!
-Grocery Sacks
-Melissa and Doug cutting fruits
-Coupons and grocery ads
-Boxes from food items (any assortment for our dramatic play center)
=Pictures of your child and family shopping at a grocery store
Do you work at the Brick Street Market? We are looking for some
guest speakers from a grocery store to talk to our students and help
us learn more about our topic!
As we study grocery stores we will learn concepts and skills in literacy,
math, science, social studies, the arts, and technology.
We will also be using thinking skills to investigate, ask questions, solve
problems, make predictions, and test our ideas.

What you can do at home

Take your child with you to the grocery store and talk about the
different departments and items you are buying.
