Description of artifact and how the artifact meets the standard:
As an educator it is important to show understanding and respect for all learners. Leighton is one of
my students who has Autism Spectrum Disorder. Her mother and I email frequently about how
Leightons day went because she can display some inappropriate behaviors at home and at school.
In this email I let Leightons mom know about some behavior that she had, and then also let her
know that even after displaying negative behaviors I played with Leighton to build up a relationship
with her because I understand and respect her as a diverse learner.
Reflection on artifact (what went right, what went wrong, how to make better):
Leighton has taught me a lot about students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and how fun and
rewarding it can be to form a relationship with a student who learns in a different way. When
Leighton started preschool as a 3 year-old she displayed a lot of inappropriate behavior, such a
crying, dropping to the floor, and having fits. Now that she is in 4 year old preschool I have seen her
make so much progress and grow so much. However, she still has a bad day every now and then
and displays these inappropriate behaviors. After an episode of inappropriate behavior I think it is
important to have a good interaction with Leighton so she enjoys school and we can form a good
bond. I also want Leighton, her mom, and other students in our classroom to know that even after
an episode of inappropriate behavior I dont hold that against Leighton and I want to treat her with
respect.
