Student Name: Brandon
Student School: Chinle Elementary School
Student Grade Level: 5th
Skill you are monitoring: Oral Reading Fluency
Skill level: 3rd grade ORF
Name of assessment used: DIBELS Next
Student goal (established in CBM Part 1): By December 19, 2014, Brandon will be able
to read 81 correct words per minute, with less than 3 errors per minute, on 3rd grade oral reading
fluency progress monitoring probes.
SUMMARY OF PROGRESS TO DATE
A. Correct Words: Since the first probe given, Brandon has done tremendously well.
Brandon started off with an average of 66 correct words per minute. Currently he is
reading at an average of 77 words correct per minute based off 3 reading probes. From
the benchmark 66 cwpm he has increased his cwpm by 11 words (77 wcpm). After the
first writing probe, Brandon was had improved by a growth of 2 correct words per
minute (78 cwpm). The third reading probe, he dropped to 77 cwpm but is still doing
well with minor errors. He has been reading cwpm above the aim line. Brandon is
skipping a couple words and is reading at a slow pace compared to a 5 th grader reading
on level.
B. Error Words: The number of errors that Brandon had made is an average of 2. He
had passed the goal of 3 errors per minute in his reading goal.
C. Observations: Brandon is great to assess in ORF but he does get distracted real
easy. He likes to talk about many other things besides the assessment. Before we
read I always tell him to do his best and try to sound out words he doesnt know. I
always ask him if he would like to know what words he has an error on and he says yes.
So this tells me he does want to improve and has improved from the first reading probe
I had given him. The patterns I see in his ORF probes are skipped words, skipped
endings, and replacing words with similar words that look the same.
D. Comparison to Goal: Brandons progress had increased by more than 11 cwpm
since his benchmark at 66 cwpm. The data indicates to me that Brandon has been
improving his reading fluency each week. He has been above the goal line by more
than 7 data points. He will meet his goal in the next couple of weeks so I have to
change his goal to keep up with his improvements.
NEXT STEPS
A. Summary of Decision Making: To analyze the new data I am going to look at
Brandons growth in cwpm and errors. He has increased in cwpm and his errors has
been a minimum of 2 errors. There are no major mistakes. He can decode well but just
needs more practice on his fluency speed. Also his errors include skipped words so he
needs more practicing on looking at each word carefully and making sure he is reading
it correctly. To decide whether or not to change instruction I will look at the data and see
if there is any major declining to show that he is not meeting is goal.
B. Summarize Change or No Change: I will not be making a change in instruction
because Brandon has been doing well with an average of 2 errors. This tells me that he
can decode words. Brandon is doing well and can continue to improve with more
practice in ORF to help him with his is slow paced reading and to continue making
minimize errors. He improved since the benchmark probes but decreases by one word
in the last writing probe given. There is no major drop so a change in instruction is not
necessary. He is above the aim line so he is improving with current instruction given.
C. Rationale for Change or No Change: I think I do not have to make a change
because of the growth he has shown in the data. There was a one word decreased in
the last probe given but it will not stop him from improving because he still continues to
be above the aim line. His errors in the probe are where he skipped one word and left
the ending off the end of one of the words. These are two mistakes that can easily be
improved without changing instruction. Brandons data shows me he can and is proving
by staying above the aim line and his errors do not exceed 2.
