Leonardo Da Vinci

The Last Supper is easily one of Da Vincis most famous paintings,

and it revolutionized how paintings were created. Since gesso paint was
used, quite a bit more detail could be added to the painting. Also, the use of
one-point perspective to bring attention to Christ was very respectable. This
painting showed the religious influence during the Renaissance, even though
humanism and separation from the Church were becoming very common.
The Last Supper is often recognized as one of the best religious paintings
due to the fact that it showed Jesuss disciples acting in the same way
normal people acted.
Not only was Da Vinci a skilled painter, but he also worked in
architecture, sculpting, inventing, and mathematics. He was basically the
definition of a Renaissance Man.

Michelangelo

The ceiling of the Sistine chapel, painted from 1508-1512, depicts

many stories from the Roman Catholic Churchs Bible, such as scenes
depicting Creation, Jesuss life, etc. This was a revolutionary painting, and
one of the most exquisite of the time. Michelangelo did what no other artist
had done before, altering the perspective so the curved surface would
appear flat to those 50 feet underneath the ceiling. I think this also shows
how influential the Catholic Church still was during this time, as the Pope
basically forced Michelangelo, a gifted sculptor, to paint the entire Chapel.
Even though Michelangelo was compensated for this work, he really didnt
want to paint it.

Raphael

The School of Athens shows many different Renaissance men all

gathered together, even though they were from very different time periods.
You can see Alexander the Great in the far left, Plato and Aristotle in the
center, and statues of Apollo and Minerva in the back.
This painting represents the influence of mathematics, astronomy,
music, and the liberal arts. By having all of these people gathered together
in one place, I think it really shows the importance of these figures in history.
