GPRS/EDGE MS Power Control: Parameter Check on PBCCH
Purpose: Verification of MS power control parameters (PBCCH)

Description: Verification of the correct transmission of the MS

power control related parameters.
Parameter values are updated the changes verified
afterwards.

1.

General Considerations
Uplink power control is performed by the GPRS mobile based on
parameters broadcast in the Packet System Infos.
Therefore we verify with this testcase that all power control
related parameters are correctly send on the control channels
and can be modified.
Measurements of the actual MS output power are not scope of
this testcase as this is a pure mobile feature.

2.

Power Control Formula

UL Power Control in GPRS is performed according to the
following formula:(Details see GSM 05.08)
Pch = min (0 - ch - * (Cn + 48), PMAX)
Special cases exist for =0 and =1.
Closed Loop Control: =0
Pch = f (ch)
MS output power only depends on signal strength measurements
made in the BTS (uplink).
Open Loop Control: =1
Pch = f (Cn); ch = const.
MS output power only depends on signal strength measurements
made in the MS (Cn = normalised rx-level at MS).
BR7.0 Implementation (similar to BR6.x):
Only open loop power control is supported because the value
of ch is not dynamically updated by the system.
ch is defined by the new database parameter GAM in the
object PTPPKF. Default value is 3 (= 6 dB which stands for
54 dBm UL RX-level), it is send to the MS in Immediate
Assignment, Packet UL/DL Assignment, Packet UL Ack/Nack,
Packet Timeslot Reconfigure and Packet Power Control/Timing
Advance messages.

Verification of the Power Control Parameters

Following parameters are checked (with default value and
range):
ALPHA
T_AVG_W
T_AVG_T
PRPBCCH
PCMECH
N_AVG_I
GAM

3

5

0-25
0-25
0-15 (2dB steps)
MEABCCH(0) MEAPDTCH(1)
0-15
0-31 (2dB steps)

The first 6 values above can be verified in the PSI1 (sent on

the PBCCH), GAM is easily verified inside a PUAS or PDAS
message.
Change the values of the above parameters (e.g. to their
min/max values) and verify them again.
Parameter names in K1297:
Alpha Power Control Parameter
Signal Strength Filter Period (Idle Mode)
Signal Strength Filter Period (Packet Transfer Mode)
Power Reduction Value
PC Meas Channel
Interfering Signal Strength Constant

End of procedure
