Art Lesson Plan

Title: Maasai Color Wheel Necklace


Grade level (s): 2nd-5th

Unit: Africa
Medium: Mixed Media

Suggested Time: 1 class period


Instructional Objectives (2-3):
Identify the arrangements of colors on the color wheel. (MO)
Students will recognize, respect, and represent diverse cultures in and through art. (KS)

Principles of Design (1-3) repetition, pattern, movement, balance, emphasis, contrast, unity
Contrast, balance, unity.
Materials and Equipment:
Markers of varied colors, white paper plates, stapler, scissors, pencil, yarn.
General Vocabulary (4-5):
Primary, secondary, analogous, monochromatic.

1) Draw a circle around the face-down plate.


2) Draw a line down the middle of the plate.
3) Draw six equal sections.
4) Color each section carefully in order. You can go down the side of the plate, leave the
edge white.
5) Cut a circle out of the center of the plate, leaving a 1 border.
6) Cut a rectangle out of the circle.
7) Staple the rectangle to the bottom of the plate.
8) Use a hole punch and punch out 3 holes out of the rectangle.
9) Cut 3 pieces of yarn and thread and tie each piece through the holes.

Talk about the different jewelry we wear here in America, then show a short, fun video
about Maasai Necklaces

Modifications / Special Notes / Drawings


1)Giftedness: Encourage the students to create the entire color wheel, rather than just
using the six colors.
2) Cognitive/Physical Disability: Have the center of the plate, yarn, and holes cut out for
the kids.
