MY PROJECT
SOLs are approaching quickly, so the
teachers and students are very busy
reviewing and preparing for testing.
I wanted a way to get parents involved
with the preparation while also proving
a fun and engaging way for students to
get ready for the SOLs.
I created a game that reviews all the third
grade Math SOLs. The students will take
the game home for two nights and play
with a family member and write about
their experience before returning it.

MY PROJECT

Math Master
Test your math skills with a family member to see
who is the Math Master!
Families, this game is designed to help your
student prepare for the Math SOL and they cant
do it without YOU. Please play with your student
and return the bag and its contents by
_________________________.
***Before you return, please write in the reflection
book about playing the game with your student
(likes, dislikes, favorite moments, etc.).

MY PROJECT

MY PROJECT
The students are given a game board, a set of sample
SOL questions I wrote and game materials.
With a family member, they roll the dice and both
answer a question on scratch paper.
The players share their answer and check on the answer
sheet.
Correct answers allow them to move forward and the
first player to the end wins.
Both players answer every question to keep everyone
engaged and make sure the student has a chance to
hit every concept.
Involving the parents in this way familiarizes them with
the material their student is learning and how they
are learning it so they can better help them learn and
remember the concepts and prepare for the SOL.

WHY A TAKE-HOME GAME?

Involving the parents in this way
familiarizes them with the material their
student is learning and how they are
learning it so they can better help them
learn and remember the concepts and
prepare for the SOL.
Whitaker and Fiore (2001) state that, the
involvement of parents in the education of
their children is of unquestionable
significance (p.15). This game gives the
parents direct involvement with what the
students are focusing in class and it gets
the parents engaged with their student and
their learning.

WHY A TAKE-HOME GAME?

Whitaker and Fiore (2001) also discuss that parental

involvement is important not only in communication with
the teacher, but also giving the parents way to be
involved in their childs education at home; having
materials to use is a great way for parents to do so easily
(p.185).

Students today are learning the curriculum in a different

way the their parents generation did, which can make it
difficult for parents to understand what their children are
doing, much less, help them. Parents need opportunities
to understand the classroom curriculum, because when
they understand it, they are much more willing and able
to be able to help their children and have meaningful
conversations about it (Davis & Yang, 2005, p. 120).

IMPLEMENTATION

I made 4 sets of the game and sent them home with students
with a note to the parents about the purpose of the game and
how to use it.

The students are allowed 2 nights with the game. 4 students

get the game on Monday and when returned, 4 new students
take them home Wednesday.

They may, of course, play the game as many times as they

want within the given timeframe. Included in each set was a
reflection booklet, in which the parents would write about their
experience with the game. This confirms that it was used and
gives me feedback for how it was working and if they liked it.

Having multiple sets allows every student a chance to use it

within a reasonable timeframe. Once every student has had a
chance to take it home, students may request to take it home a
second time (still for 2 nights)
