LeNoir2 Joseph LeNoir Professor Lynn Raymond UWRT 1102-E01 17 March 2015 we #7 Cell Phone Usage through Different Eyes Cell phones are always a controversial topic about how their roles impact the world, Many people ae all for change and look forward to the next version of the iPhone; however, some people are against the use of these technologies. Kevin ‘Thomas wrote an article called Cel! the great benefits that technology can supply, Phones in the Classroom, were he explaii specifically within schools, On the other hand, Mark Glaser and his article called How Cell impacts that cell phones can have if the world today. fa vi Cell phones are not the oply center point about the technological controversy that 1 am researching, but is the most reldvant. The other technologies include texting, social media, and other means of “artificial” confmunication, such as Skype. All of these technologies are combined together in oe as smartphones today; so cell phones are ground zero for this controversy. In Thomas’s article, he explains the benefits of using cell phones in a classroom, Thomas makes a good argument that cell phones should have use in classrooms and he has a wide variety of sources. It is evident that Thomas did his homework and he is knowledgeable about this topie, he went out and wrote about sources that supported him such as, “the U.S, National Education Technology Plan (2010) states that to improve student learning, educators should incorporate everyday technologies” (Thomas). This makes Thomas a very LeNoir 2 reliable source and all the references he uses are potential references I may use in my presentation, He also goes on to make his own arguments for the use of cell phones. Thomas explains some of the many uses of technology, “Further, researchers have examined the use of cell phones to access the Internet, send text messages, and use cameras and recorders 10 determine their potential for classroom application with promising results” (Thomas). This and several other points are good reasons for the use of technology, Some negative points for this article is how many times Thomas talks about the negatives with cell phones in class. Its very important to consider both extremes of the use of technology, however Thomas seems to ruin his point for defending technology in class when he discusses many topies such as cyberbullying. Other negative points Thomas makes is the use of “textese, the language of texting, which is characterized by abbreviations and slang (Drouin & Driver, 2012; Thomas & McGee, 2012) and has been a concer of some educators in regard to literacy” (Thomas). This articly Gents he use of cell phones in the classroom very well, but the case seems to fall apart yhen Thomas discusses about the negatives involved with cell phones. The other article was called How Cell Phones Are Killing Face-to-Face Interactions which was written by Mark Glaser. Glaser focuses on all the negatives with the use of technology. Unlike Thomas, Glaser focuses a little more on social media. However, most of this article discusses cell phones. The biggest point that Glaser brings up is that more and more people would rather spend their fire time on their cell phones rather than face-to-face interaction. Glaser uses people to back up his argument for the impact of cell phones and in the article, one source explains that, “I'd rather be with the people around me than worry about who’s going to call me, who I need to call back and all that. It’s really a sad state of our society to see so many people tied down to their cel! phones” (Glaser). Glaser continues to explain that this is not the | 7 LeNoir4 Works Cited ‘Thomas, Kevin, and Blanche OBannon. "Cell phones in the classroom: preservice teachers’ perceptions."
