Topic: Pictographs

Materials: worksheets to follow along while I use the smart board, a student data
set, an exit ticket worksheet, homework assignment

Objectives:
Students will be able to generate and organize data using a tally chart and
pictograph.
Students will review the concept of interpreting multiplication as repeated
addition by group counting on a vertical number line.

What does each symbol on a pictograph represent?


How is every fifth number shown using tallies?
What does only drawing half a symbol on a pictograph represent?
How do you set up tape diagram for model division?

Teaching Activities:

(Me) Fluency Practice; Using a vertical number line to group count by sixes to
60 (9 minutes)
(Frost) Tape Diagrams; Model division with tape diagrams (6 minutes)
(Me) Fraction Application Problem (7 minutes)
(Together) Take a class survey of their favorite color out of green, yellow, red,
blue, and orange, and collect data with a tally chart. After answering
worksheet problems, translate the data from the tally chart into a pictograph
and answer the problems for together as well. (20-30 minutes)
Exit Ticket (3-5 minutes)

Collect exit tickets and pull any students that need help on concept

Homework (About 10 minutes, have students take home to finish)
