Tutorial 6 Aerodynamics

1.

A particle of radioactive dust can be approximated to be a sphere of density 2400 kg/m3.

The particle experienced a free fall from height 12 km. Predict time in days taken by the
particle to fall to the sea level if its diameter is:
(a)
(b)

1 m,
20 m,

Use properties of air flows as averages of conditions at heights 0 and 12 km:

Density 0.819 kg/m3
Gravitational acceleration 9.79 m/s2
Dynamic viscosity1.63 105 kg/ms
Answer: (a) 1,724 days; (b) 4.31 days

2.

An aircraft having weight 180 kN with wing area 160 m2 and chord 4 m flew at a speed
of 400 km/hr at height 3000 m where the local air density is 0.9092 kg/m3. The relation
between the drag coefficient and the lift coefficient for the wing is known to be:

C D C D

C L2

where CD 0.006 is the drag coefficient for an infinite wing span and is the aspect
ratio, i.e. ratio of the span to the chord.
(a)
(b)

(c)

At height 3000 m, calculate the thrust required to overcome friction drag,

If the speed of the aircraft during take-off is 160 km/hr with thrust 10 kN, estimate
the distance required for it for a successful departure without any assistance from
any aileron attached to the wing,
If the permissible distance for departure is only 1250 m, calculate the thrust
required.

For (b) and (c), use air density of 1.225 kg/m3 at sea level.
Answer: (a) 726 kW; (b) 2.92 km; 18.0 kN
