Energy & Environment

This is a PowerPoint that will

teach you about energy and
the need for biogas.

Advantages of Biogas

Biogas

Biogas is a mixture of carbon dioxide , methane hydrogen

and hydrogen sulphide, the major constituent being
methane

It is produced by degradation of animal wastes in the

presence of water

Biogas is very useful for rural areas where a lot of animal

waste and agriculture waste is available .

It is clean , non polluting and cheap.

There is direct supply of gas from the
plant and there is no storage of
problems.
The sludge left over is a rich fertilizer
containing bacterial biomass with most
of the nutrients preserved as such.
Air tight degradation of the animal
wastes is safe as it eliminates health
hazard

How Does Biogas Work?

What is important
Stirring

Anaerobic means
that there is NO
oxygen present!

Prevents scum growth

Retention Time
Effected by temperature, dilution, loading

rate, etc.
A normal period for the digestion of dung
would be 2 to 4 weeks
At high temperature bio-digestion occurs faster

BIOFUEL
Biomass can be fermented to alcohos
like ethanol and methanol which can be
used as fuels.
Its burns clean and is non polluting .
Gasohol is a common used in Brazil and
zimbawe for running car and buses.
Methanol is very useful since it burns at
a lower temperature than gasoline or
diesel
