Using ftp, Fetch, & X-Term

This document contains instructions on how to transfer files to your Pegasus or


Andromeda account using ftp, Fetch, and X-Term for PC, Macintosh and UNIX
platforms, respectively.

Transferring Files
Fetch, ftp, and X-Term are programs used to move files between email accounts and a
computers hard drive. These programs are commonly used for adding attachments to
or retrieving attachments from email messages.
Before transferring any file, save all work and close all programs. Then follow the
instructions below with respect to the type of computer or operating system that is
available.

PC
Opening the Program
1. Click on Start, point to Programs, then Communications, then WS_FTP (File
Transfer), then WS-FTP95 LE. Click on the WS_FTP icon. The SESSION
PROPERTIES box will appear.
2. In the fields below, enter the information with respect to the account you are
copying the file to:
PROFILE NAME: type in the domain name of the account (i.e. Pegasus.rutgers.edu)
HOST NAME: type in the domain name of the account (i.e. Pegasus.rutgers.edu)
USER ID: type in the username
PASSWORD: type in the password

3. Click on OK to connect to the account.


Note: At the bottom-center portion of the SESSION box, the binary operator button
should be marked. Also, if you are transferring ASCII text files, you need to select
TEXT.

Moving Files to the Account


1. The left window lists the directories. Double-click where the files are located.
Click on the file you want to transfer (highlight it).
2. There are two arrows pointing to the left and right (< >) between the two white
windows. Click on the arrow pointing to the right, towards the account you are
transferring the file to.

Moving Files from the Account


1. At the right window, highlight the file you wish to transfer from the account you
logged in to. At the left window, browse to find the appropriate directory/drive
where you want to save your file.
2. Click on the arrow pointing to the left to transfer the file to your chosen
drive/directory.

Confirming Files
The file name will appear in both windows to confirm that the file has been
transferred.

Quitting
At the lower-left corner, click on the CLOSE button to disconnect the account you
logged in to. Then, at the lower-right corner, click on the EXIT button to quit the
program.

Macintosh
Opening the Program
1. Double-click on the Fetch icon if it is on your desktop:

2. If the Fetch icon is not on the desktop, double-click on the following folders:
Application Communication Fetch

Getting to your Account


1. In the fields below, enter the information with respect to the account you are
copying the file to. Leave the other fields blank:
HOST: type in the domain name of the account (i.e. Pegasus.rutgers.edu)
USER ID: type in the username
PASSWORD: type in the password
2. Click on OK to connect to the account.
Note: At the bottom-center portion of the SESSION box, the binary operator button
should be marked. Also, if you are transferring ASCII text files, you need to select
TEXT.

Moving Files to the Account


1. To transfer a file into your account, click on PUT FILE. A dialogue box will open.
From the box, find the file you wish to open.
2. Click OPEN, and another box will appear.
3. Click OK to copy the file into your account.

Moving Files from the Account


1. Highlight the file in your account you wish to transfer. Click on GET FILE to
retrieve the file from your account.
2. A dialogue box will open- choose the appropriate place to save the file and click
on SAVE.

Confirming Files
Check your account and the computers hard drive to confirm transfers for both.

Quitting
From the File pull-down menu, click on Close. Then return to the File pull-down
menu and click on Quit.

UNIX
Opening the Program
At the Unix prompt, type the following and hit ENTER:
ftp> <Domain Name>
For example:
ftp Pegasus.rutgers.edu

Getting to your Account


Log in to your account by typing in your username and password when prompted.
You will receive confirmation if you succeeded in logging in to the account.
Note: The default type of transfer is ASCII. To use binary, type bin at the ftp prompt.

Moving Files to the Account


1. Type the following at the prompt:
SEND <filename>
2. Press ENTER to transfer the file into the account.

Moving Files from the Account


1. Type the following at the prompt:
GET <filename>
2. Press ENTER to transfer the file into another account.

Confirming Files
To make sure you copied the file successfully, type ls at the prompt to list all of the
files in the directory. The file will be listed if it transferred successfully.

Quitting
To quit the program, type the following at the prompt and press ENTER:
ftp> exit
