When I grow up I

want to go to
college!

By: Tanya Lee Stone

Illustrated by Majorie Priceman
I found this book to be a great choice, because it is based
off of a true story of a woman during the 1830s a time
when woman were limited to job options and had to take
care of the home and family. It tells her story in a more
children appropriate, and animated manner. I felt while
this book is the focus of the station children growing up
and going to a university to become doctors, lawyers,

nurses, teachers, etc. it also brings some women gender

stereotypes that can be discussed. This allow students to
have a deeper more critical understanding of the book,
while still focusing on the main goal of the station.
(Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman to graduate from medical school in the United
States. She became a leading public health activist during her lifetime.)
