11-12 years old
2 are Hispanic, the rest are Caucasian
No disabilities
A mix of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners
o This lesson contains elements for all three
1:1 classroom with netbooks that go home
o Netbooks have access to the internet (filtered) at home through Verizon
Students have lots of experience utilizing netbooks, internet, and YouTube
o All students should be able to successfully access/complete the H.W.
Content prerequisites required for this lesson
o Basic understanding of the terms food chain and food web
o Other concepts needed for the activity are presented in the videos
Technology Prerequisites
o Basic computer skills
o Ability to navigate to YouTube and play a video
o Ability to navigate to a website and play a simple game
State Objectives

MI GLCE (6th Grade Science)

o L.OL.06.51
Classify producers, consumers, and decomposers
based on their source of food (the source of energy and building materials)
Objective
o Students should be able to classify an organism as a producer, consumer, or decomposer
based on its source of food/energy without error

Select Methods, Media, , and Materials

Netbooks with home internet access will be utilized to complete H.W.

H.W. (night before activity)
o Watch YouTube video, Food Chain Basic (6m)
This video introduces the following topics
o How living things need each other
o Producers and consumers (herbivore, omnivore, carnivore)
o Food chain
o Predator/prey
o Food web
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJ-_17NbGb4

H.W. (night before activity)

o Watch YouTube video, Producers, Consumers, and Decomposers (6m 28s)
This video is a bit more detailed than the first one-watch second

H.W. (night before activity)

o Play online: The Producers, Consumers, Decomposers Game (5m)
http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/content/animals/kidscorner/games/producersconsumersgame.htm

In the event of technology issues

o Recommend that students do their assignments early, and utilize the computers at the library
if they have any issue with theirs
o If that is not possible, recommend that they have their parents write a note that the netbooks
werent working or were unable to connect to the internet
They can then do the homework during lunch/recess
Quiz (right before activity) (5m)
o Producer, Consumer, or Decomposer?
This quiz will assess learning and evaluate whether students have done the
homework
Example quiz located at the end of this document
Class Activity (20m)
o Give all students a piece of paper with a string to wear
o Each paper should have a picture of a producer, consumer or decomposer with its name
You should also have a picture of the sun for the review activity
o Tell students to organize themselves into producers, consumers, and decomposers
o Ask each student to state their animals name by group
o Ask if any are in the wrong category
o Have students switch signs with someone and do the activity again
o Review old concepts
Have some students move around to create example food chains while the rest
observe

Use the entire class to create a food web

Utilize Media, Materials, and Methods

Preview the Materials

o Two videos, game, and quiz
Prepare the materials
o Students should already have netbooks assigned to them
o Print one picture of a producer, consumer, or decomposer for every student
Include organisms name
In addition to the above, print a picture of the sun for the review activity
o Punch two holes in each paper and tie a string to it (to make a necklace)
Prepare the environment
o Move room around if necessary to make three open areas for students to stand
Prepare the learners
o Tell students
Tonight for homework you will be learning about producers, consumers and
decomposers. You will be watching two YouTube videos and then playing an
online game. There will be a quiz at the beginning of science tomorrow. Some
of the quiz questions will be from the two videos, and some will be from the
game. You will have to identify whether an organism is a producer, consumer,
or decomposer. After the quiz, we will do an activity. Its important that you do
the homework so that you will be able to participate.
The learning objective for this lesson is that you should be able to classify an
organism as a producer, consumer, or decomposer based on its source of
food/energy.
Provide the learning experiences
o H.W. (before activity)
YouTube Video: Food Chain Basic (6m)
YouTube Video: Producers, Consumers, and Decomposers (6m 28s)
Online Game: The Producers, Consumers, Decomposers Game (5m)
o Quiz: Producer, Consumer, or Decomposer? (5m)
o In class activity (20m)

Require Learner Participation

The quiz should take about 5 minutes and will be taken independently.
The in class activity (with food chain/web review) should take about 20 minutes. Each student will have to
look at their organism and decide whether it is a producer, consumer, or decomposer. After they decide
which group to join, they will look around and decide if their classmates are in the correct groups. They
will then have to repeat the activity.
For the food chain review, some students will be actively participating as I use them to demonstrate

example food chains while the rest of the class observes.

During the food web review all students will be part of the web.
Evaluate & Revise

Student Performance
o To assess each student I will
Review their quiz
Observe the activity to see if they are able to successfully categorize their animal
and provide feedback for others.
Media Effectiveness
o I will ask students
Did any of you have trouble utilizing the netbooks, watching the YouTube videos,
or playing the online game?
Did the H.W. help you to understand the learning objective?
Instructor Performance
o I will ask students
What did you think of the flipped lesson model?
o Learning the concepts at home and then using them in class?
Did you like the in class activity?
o Did it help you to understand the concepts?
Do you feel like you met the learning objectives?
Yo2 are Hispanic, the rest are Caucasian
o u should be able to classify an organism as a producer, consumer or
decomposer based on its source of food/energy.
