A Midsummer Nights Dream
may be a fictional story but the love in this tale is quite
realistic. People fall in love and either stay in love or fall out of it. It isnt that simple, of
course. Love itself is a vast, complicated concept so theres no exact way of portraying it.
Although two people (or more, in some cases) can have mutual feelings of love for each
other, there are bound to be complications.
Several major characters within the play experience love in one way or another.
There are two types of love: there is love between family and then there is affection
between significant others. The four lovers have complicated infatuations due to the
Athenian law and actions of Robin Goodfellow, or Puck. Due to Pucks mistake, putting the
nectar on Demetrius eyes rather than Lysanders, Hermia is left confused. While Hermia
and Lysander have shared feelings, Demetrius also wishes to be with Hermia. But Helena is
in love with Demetrius. After the enchantment, both men sought Helenas affections. That
left Hermia confused and hurt. Hermia says O hell, to choose love by anothers eyes! The
lovers affections were all mixed up because of an external force. Initially, Hermia and
Lysander were fine but the two other lovers experienced many obstacles in their course of
love.
As for Titania and Oberon, their love isnt as romantic as the lovers but that doesnt
mean it isnt true. Their marriage has faced several difficulties. That leads to separation but
in the end they always return to each other. In the play, the cause of their marital problem
was the Indian boy. Eventually, Titania had to give in to Oberons request because of the
love spell. During that enchantment, she became infatuated with Nick Bottom who sported
a donkey head at the time. Prior to the spell, she was upset with Oberon but afterwards, she
was relieved to see him. My Oberon! what visions have I seen! Methought I was enamour'd
of an ass. After trying to be independent and strong, she inevitably falls back into his arms.
That should mean she has some deep attachment to him. The two may have countless
struggles during their marriage but their marriage remains intact.
It is arguable that true love is self-explanatory. Maybe there have been love stories
which begin with happiness and end with happiness. With no major conflicts, love will
remain unadulterated. Of course, that is not always the case. Complications strengthen
bonds by proving how dedicated people are. True love doesnt have to run smooth in order
to be true.
Although The course of true love never did run smooth, it prevails in the end. The
four lovers and royals conquered the obstacles put in front of them. Their love remained
