Stripes | Spring 2012 | Intro to Design | cut paper

Colors and lines - thats really all that this piece is. It was a straightforward
assignment and I felt that I had a good sense for what I wanted to do. As I began
assembling each individual piece, I really focused on the color choice and the
width of each stripe. I wanted there to be an equal balance of color and density,
without too much of one color over another. The widths used were done in a
similar way; I wanted to create a sense of stability through the lines without them
feeling too heavy or too light. Although each piece had a specific requirement
(asymmetrical, dense, symmetrical, and open), I also wanted them to be
connected with each other. When presenting the pieces, I wanted them to appear
to be related with one another, even though they each had a different objective. I
was able to accomplish this by the angles and placement of the lines. For
example, the diagonal line moving from the top right piece to the bottom right
piece connects the two even though different colors were used to create that
diagonal line. Similarly, the vertical lines going from the top left down to the
bottom left unite the two separate pieces. I played with color a lot in this
assignment, and my ability for creating harmonious arrangements was
strengthened.
