Student Teaching Spring 2015

Pennfield Middle School & High School

Lesson #4
Unit Title: A Reintroduction of Counting in Beginning Band
Lesson Title: Marching To The Music
Grade Level: 5th or 6th grade beginning band
Subjects Integrated: Music and dance
Objectives: The students should be able to perform two notated rhythms simultaneously as two
groups
Materials: Pre-made rhythmic lines written on the board or projected.
Learning Activities
a) Instructional Materials: The students will only need an open space to stand that is
free to move around in.
b) Procedures: The students will be making a rhythmic composition. They will be
instructed to snap their fingers for the pictures of "candy" and to stomp their feet for the
pictures of "corn. For "watermelon" they will clap. The students will learn two separate
lines of rhythm. Line A will be learnt first with the whole group and the process will be
repeated with line B. After that, the students will be split into two groups and each will
be assigned either A or B. First each group will perform their line for the other. Then, the
two groups will perform their lines at the same time creating a multi-rhythmic
composition. This activity can be repeated over again using different lines and groups.
c) Instructional Groups: The students will be dependent and interactive with their group
members. The teacher will coach the students through learning the lines and directing
their composition.
d) Discussion: The teacher will ask the different groups to perform and retry certain
sections to test their knowledge and correct problem areas.
e) Assessment: The students will be individually assessed informally during the activity.
The teacher should recognize students who struggle to read the rhythms, transfer the
reading into bodily movements, or seem disinterested in the activity.
Closure
a) The lesson will end with packing up and moving any items that needed to be moved to
create space in the room.
b) The lesson will be evaluated by the students involvement and interest in the activity
Standards
ART.M.II.6.6: Use a variety of traditional and nontraditional sound sources when
