Unit Title: A Reintroduction of Counting in Beginning Band
Lesson Title: The Big Picture: Writing in a Counting System (Day 1 of 2)
Grade Level: 5th or 6th grade beginning band
Subjects Integrated: Music and math
Objectives: To correctly write in the counting to concert music
Materials: Sheet Music
Learning Activities
a) Instructional Materials: A piece of concert music that the students will sight read will
be distributed.
b) Procedures: The students will be instructed to write the counting in for the entire

students will then sing and/or clap through the piece. Any rhythmic concerns should be
discussed and practiced again until everyone in the class can execute them.
c) Instructional Groups: The teacher should make sure to walk around in order to
control the room better and to remain on the students level of interaction.
d) Discussion: The discussion will happen between the students and the teacher when
examining the counting of the rhythms.
e) Assessment: The students will be individually formatively assessed by how well they
seem to be following along throughout the class progression.
Closure
a) The students will be asked to pack up.
b) The lesson will be evaluated by how much information the students retain for the
following lesson.
