Student Teaching Spring 2015

Pennfield Middle School & High School

Lesson #8
Unit Title: A Reintroduction of Counting in Beginning Band
Lesson Title: Listening and Repeat Rhythms
Grade Level: 5th or 6th grade beginning band
Subjects Integrated: Music and dance
Objectives: The students should be able to aurally and visually recognize simple performed
rhythms.
Materials: A rhythms example sheet
Learning Activities
a) Instructional Materials: The students will be given a new rhythm sheet similar to the
one used in the previous lesson.
b) Procedures: The lesson will start with a review of the previous lesson. For this the
students will perform and turn in their assigned homework. The class will then start a
rhythm repeating game. To start the leader will be the teacher. The teacher will perform,
or clap, a random rhythm from the page. The students should watch closely and then
repeat it. After they repeat, the students should examine their sheet to see which rhythm
matches the sound. The first one to raise their hand and give the correct rhythm number
wins
c) Instructional Groups: The students will have to show respectful and responsible
classroom behavior in order to participate. This will encourage them to monitor their
own behavior and to make sure they raise their hands.
d) Discussion: If the students do not repeat a rhythm correctly I will ask them to watch
and listen closer. They will be expected to repeat the process until it is correct before
they move on to identifying the written rhythm.
e) Assessment: A formative assessment will be used on each student as they perform as a
group. The excelling student will be noticeable by their speed and willingness to
volunteer. The slower student will also be noticeable.
Closure
a) The lesson will end by the students packing up.
b) The lesson will be evaluated by how well the students seemed to grasp the concepts
and how well they participated in the activity
Standards
ART.M.I.6.1: Sing and play with expression and technical accuracy, an increasingly
diverse repertoire of literature at developmentally-appropriate levels. Perform at least
one selection from memory.
