Student Teaching Spring 2015

Pennfield Middle School & High School

Lesson #5c
Unit Title: A Reintroduction of Counting in Beginning Band
Lesson Title: Discovering Note Relationships (Day 3 of 3)
Grade Level: 5th or 6th grade beginning band
Subjects Integrated: Music and math
Objectives: To recognize the different notes of modern western music and their relation to one
another
Materials: Paper handouts
Learning Activities
a) Instructional Materials: The students will be given manuscript paper and will be
asked to take out a sheet of blank lined paper for notes.
b) Procedures: The students will be given a few examples involving the mathematics
used in music. Each example will be represented by a note such as a whole note. The
students will then be asked to verbally, and by raising their hands, give all of the
combinations of notes that they can think of that equal the given note. For example, a
whole note can equal 4 quarter notes, two half notes, or 8 eighth notes. The students will
be directed to illustrate this on their manuscript paper. After they have reviewed a few
examples, the students will be directed to take out their not paper. The relationship of
note to rests will be drawn and explained. It should start with a whole note and what a
whole note rest looks like. The lesson should then progress to half, quarter, and eighth
notes.
c) Instructional Groups: The students will be encouraged to ask questions and inquire
about information they dont understand.
d) Discussion: The students will verbally be asked questions such as how many beats
does this note get, how many quarter notes equal a half note, and can you clap these
notes for me?
e) Assessment: The students will be given brief forma-tive assessments mentally by the
teacher. This will include areas such as their progress, attention, and involvement. They
will also be assessed using short homework assignments.
Closure
a) The students will give a review work-sheet with similar exercises as those used in the
past three days for lesson plan #5 1, 2, and 3.
b) By competing this, the students will be evaluated on the level of information that they
have absorbed and their ability to implement it.
