The Department of Communication at Virginia Tech focuses on communication processes and their effects on individuals, organizations, culture, and society. Faculty and students create, distribute, and interpret messages through media systems. Students build knowledge and skills
for future study and work in public relations, multimedia journalism or communication studies.

Communication Studies

This pre-professional major provides students


with adaptation strategies and tactics for succeeding in the evolving job market, and allows
students flexibility in crafting their own plan
of study. Students will have broad exposure to
communication theories and practices, stressing
understanding of and effective participation in
communication across interpersonal, organizational, and public contexts.

Multimedia Journalism
This major prepares students for careers in all
types of journalistic media. Youll learn about
publishing news across various media platforms
ranging from newspapers and magazines to
television and the Web. You will develop skills
in interviewing, study writing, photography and
digital video production. Other courses address
media history, law, ethics, controversies and opportunities in the changing news media.

about issues in the public relations industry.
