The great technologies developed during the

industries all over Europe and in the United
States to invent new tools and machines.

linen, cotton)

As the demand for more cotton


increased, new inventions were
made to remove the cotton seed
from the cotton
Eli Whitney invented the cotton
gin in 1793

because there was a need for a
cheap/convenient source of
power (for all the other machines
that were invented!)

Process
Henry Bessemer developed the Bessemer
process (1850s) for making steel out of
iron

made steelmaking cheap
and efficient.

LOUIS PASTEUR developed
Pasteurization, the sterilization of
liquids (1860s). He discovered that
germs causes sickness

food supply and the
general health of the
English people

Thomas Edison invented the light bulb
which dramatically improved electric
light (1879)
