The Giver. Jonas and his family are getting ready to attend the annual ceremony, where kids become a year older and they get assigned new jobs and roles in their society. His little sister, Lily, is becoming an eight, which here means she is turning 8 years old. Jonas is becoming a twelve. He is very excited and nervous because he will get assigned a job for the rest of his life. They joke around a bit and then they leave for the ceremony. Finally they get to Jonas, he becomes the Receiver of Memory. In his community, this role is very honorable. He is in charge of keeping all the memories of the past,like grandparents or colors. As he begins his training, the giver, his mentor, gives him many happy and sad memories. He struggles through all the memories, wanting other people to share his experiences, feel his pain with him, but they cant. Thats what happens in chapters 6-12 in The Giver
