The Giver By: Lois Lowry

Summary
Lois Lowry's The Giver is a classic young adult novel. It follows Jonas, an
eleven-year-old boy who must become the new Receiver of Memory for his
community, a position which will require him to house all the memories purged
from the other citizens.
Chapter 1 introduces Jonas, his family, and some friends, and shows the
novel's setting. Set at some indeterminate future date, the community is a
tightly controlled society where rules are strictly enforced. The chapter suggests
that not even wildlife is allowed in the community, as Jonas and his sister know
the word ''animal'' means uncivilized but are not sure what an animal is in real
life.
The chapter opens with Jonas recounting a time he had been afraid; an
incident a year before where a plane landed near the community. The pilot was
''released,'' an action only taken with those who violate certain laws or are
repeat offenders, the elderly, and certain newchildren.
It's almost the end of the year, and Jonas realizes he feels apprehensive
about something coming up. That evening, he and his family, his parents and
younger sister Lily, sit and discuss their feelings during the day.
Jonas' father is a Nurturer who cares for the newchildren in the
community. He is concerned with one child in particular who is not sleeping
well and not growing as he should. Jonas' mother works at the community's
Department of Justice and is worried about a repeat offender she saw that day.
If he breaks the rules again, he may be released. Lily explains that she was
angry with a little boy at school. The little boy was not following the rules.
Jonas is anxiously awaiting December, and the Ceremony of Twelve. In this
lesson, we will learn more about the yearly ceremonies and Jonas's community

relatively unimportant rule. If the child is not released before the Naming, he
will be named Gabriel -- although Father reveals he has nicknamed the child
Gabe. Jonas decides Gabe is a good name.
The Rules
As they talk, Jonas's father recalls when he was waiting for his own
Ceremony of Twelve, he did not pay much attention to the other ceremonies
taking place over the two-day time period. He does remember watching his
younger sister become a Nine and receive her first bicycle. Although it was
technically against the rules, he had been teaching his sister, Katya, to ride on
his own bicycle. Jonas chuckles, since they all know this is 'one of the few rules
that was not taken very seriously and was almost always broken.'
Jonas's community is highly structured, and follows a rather strict set of
rules. Breaking the rules means risking the worst possible punishment: release.
It seems here, however, that the rules vary in importance, and there are some
instances where rule-breaking can be overlooked.

We learn that every December, all of the children in the community are
promoted to the next age group—all four-year-old children become Fives,
regardless of the time of year when they were actually born. We also learn that
fifty children are born every year. The ceremonies are different for each age
group. At the Ceremony of One new children, who have spent their first year at
the Nurturing Center, are assigned to family units and given a name to use in
addition to the number they were given at birth. Jonas’s father confesses to his
family that he has peeked at the struggling new child’s name—Gabriel—in the
hopes that calling him a name will help the child develop more quickly. Jonas is
surprised that his father would break any kind of rule, though the members of
the community seem to bend rules once in a while. For instance, older siblings
often teach younger siblings to ride bicycles before the Ceremony of Nine, when
they receive their first official bicycles.
Jonas’s parents reassure him that the Committee of Elders, the ruling
group of the community, will choose a career for him that will suit him. The
Committee members observe the Elevens all year, at school and play and at the
volunteer work they are required to do after school and consider each child’s
abilities and interests when they make their selection. Jonas’s father tells him
that when he was eleven, he knew he would be assigned the role of Nurturer,
because it was clear that he loved new children and he spent all his volunteer
hours in the Nurturing Center. When Jonas expresses concern about his friend
Asher’s Assignment—he worries that Asher does not have any serious interests
—his parents tell him not to worry, but remind him that after Twelve, he might
lose touch with many of his childhood friends, since he will be spending his time
with a new group, training for his job. Then Jonas’s sister Lily appears, asking
for her “comfort object”—a community-issued stuffed elephant. The narrator
refers to the comfort objects as “imaginary creatures. Jonas’s had been called a
bear.”

Analysis
Chapter 1 sets up many of the elements in the world of The Giver. Most
importantly, it shows the community's reliance on rules and order. Everything
has a place and the community appears, at least at first, as an orderly place to
live. However, several other concepts are also introduced which hint at the
dystopian nature of the setting.
The concept of being ''released'' is first mentioned in this chapter. While it
is apparently done to newchildren and the elderly, it is considered shameful
when done as a punishment. While the exact process is not elaborated upon, the
narrative's tone describes being released with a finality that cannot be undone.
The concept of newchildren goes unexplained in this chapter, but the
narrative mentions that people are ''given'' spouses. While it is confirmed in
later chapters, Chapter 1 shows that the community is not just orderly, but
rigid and controlling, in almost every aspect of its citizens' lives.
The community's isolation also becomes apparent as both Jonas and Lily
know the word ''animal'' refers to something which does not follow rules, but
they don't actually know what an animal is, implying that the community is
sterile and free of anything that cannot be controlled fully. Later chapters also
show that even the weather is controlled as Jonas had never seen rain.
At the beginning of The Giver, we have a difficult time figuring out the
setting of the novel. We do not know what it is that Jonas is afraid of—from the
reference to unidentified aircraft, we might think that he lives in a war zone.
When we find out that it is against the rules for Pilots to fly over the
community, we know that Jonas lives in a community that is different from our
own, but we do not know at first how different it. Lowry allows the small details
about life in Jonas’s community to build up gradually into a more complete
picture.
Initially, the picture we get of Jonas’s society is positive. From the
emphasis on precision of language and the considerate, careful way in which

Jonas’s family shares its feelings, we learn that his society values the clear
communication of ideas.
