STANDARDS/OUTCOMES

OBJECTIVES Through these learning activities, the student will be able to:

Students will describe how stars are different and what makes up star patterns.
INSTRUCTION
Introduction/Instructional activities/Conclusion

Students will turn in their books to page 271. We will read the introduction as a class. Once they
have their books open we will talk about constellations that they have seen in the sky. I will ask
them if they are able to see the stars during the day or at night. On the smartboard will be the
handout that each child is getting. It has a black page with star images on it. The students will
begin by observing the star images. They will look at the page and how it is split up into sections
using faint white lines. The students will estimate how many stars they see on the page. Then we
will look at the different stars on the page and compare how bright or dull they seem to be. Each
student will estimate how many dim, bright and medium stars they see on the page. Everyone will
have different numbers for their estimates written down on their page in their book. As a group we
will discuss how they are to graph their estimates on the graph provided on their pages. Each
student will need to complete the graph with their estimate then raise their hand for it to be viewed.
After this activity is complete each child will look at page 273. This page has a focus on the main
idea and details. Students will read a short paragraph titled, Sky Report. When finished reading
they will fill out a chart with main idea and supporting details. Students will share their main ideas
and details. As a class we will compare the different main ideas and chose the best one.

How this lesson provides for ASSESSMENT of student learning:

Pre-assessment
Students will brainstorm ideas of ways to estimate how many stars are in the sky without counting each one.
Checking up
Completion of graphic organizer to show main idea.
Post-assessment

Checking their star estimation page to show understanding.

How this lesson provides DIFFERENTIATION for the students in this class

In this lesson the possibility of putting the Big Dipper on the board will help students to think of a
constellation that they know of.

RESOURCES NEEDED

Science book, paper, sky handout, pencils

REFLECTIVE ASSESSMENT of lesson and student success (To be written on back after lesson is taught)

This lesson was a simple introduction into the sky and the stars that we might or might not see.
Each student was willing to work hard to figure out what constellations they already knew. I put
up the picture of the Big Dipper on the smart board and we worked together to find the main idea
of the Sky Report.
