UNDERSTANDING THE USE OF MEASURING TOOLS.

i)

Measure length.
-

Length is the distance between two point

We must use suitable measuring tools to measure length.
Length
- Short straight line
- Straight line less than 1 m
- Straight line more than 1 m
- curve
- External diameter
- Internal diameter

ii)

Measure the volume of liquid.

Measuring tools
- Ruler
- Half-metre ruler or metre
ruler.
- measuring tape
- string and ruler
- opisometer and ruler
- external calipers and
ruler
- vernier calipers.
- Internal calipers and ruler
- vernier calipers.

Measuring Cylinder
Used to measure liquid to the
nearest ml or cm3

Pipette
Used to measure
fixed volume of liquid
for example 20 cm3,
25cm3, and 50cm3 , of
solution accurately.

Burette
Used to measure
volume of solution
accurately.
( The smallest
division on burette is
0.1 ml)

iii)
Measure the body temperature and the temperature of a
liquid.
Measuring body
temperature

- Clinical thermometer
- Measure temperatures between 35 C and 42
C
- The body temperature is normally taken by
placing the bulb of the thermometer under
the
tongue for two minutes.
- The constriction near the bulb Prevents the
mercury from flowing back to the bulb when
the
thermometer is being read.

Measuring the
temperature of water

- Liquid-in-glass thermometer
- Used in laboratory to measure the
Temperature
of water and other Liquid.
- Measure temperature between -10 C and
110C.
- To measure the temperature of Water , the
bulb

of the thermometer Is placed in the water.

When the thread of the mercury stops
expanding or contracting, the temperature is
read.
iii)

Volume of solid
Water displacement method
-

1.5

The volume of regular and irregular solids can be estimated

by
using the water displacement method.

Determine the weight of an object

Explain the concept of weight
Determine the difference between mass and weight.
Explain the difference between mass and weight.
Apply the use of spring and beam/lever balance in the context of an
Experiment.

Mass
- Quantity of matter contained in an object
- The more the quantity of matter in the
Object , the greater is its mass.

Weight
- Pull of the earths gravitational force on
An object.
- The greater is the gravitional force, the
greater is the weight of the object

- SI unit is kilogram

- SI unit is newton

- Can be measured by beam balance or

lever balance.

- Can be measured by spring balance or

compression balance.

- Its value is a constant.

- Its value varies from place to place
