RevisitingyourGoals

Sincewritingmyinitialgoals,IhavehadafewconversationswithmyadministrationaboutSTEM.Concernswere
broughttomyattentionbyafewparentsandstudentsaboutthecurriculum.AparentinKindergartenwaswondering
whytherewerentmoreprojectsassignedtothestudents.Iexplainedtomyadministrationthattheprojector
experienceswerecontainedintheonehourclassperiod,andthatIdidnotassignlargerprojects.Ialsorealized
thatIwasnotactivelycommunicatingtheseprojectstoparentsandeventomyadministrators,sincetheywere
sometimesatalossintermsofrespondingtotheparents.
ClassroommanagementhasalwaysbeenmyAchillesheelasateacher,andthesituationwasexacerbatedthisyear
withthenewposition.Withtheoldergrades,ItriedtocreateaMakerspaceenvironmentwhenrollingoutsuch
activitiesastheSquishyCircuitsandMakeyMakey.Unfortunately,thoseprojectsandtheclassroomenvironment
weremisunderstoodbymyadministrators,andsometimestheenvironmentwasperceivedtobechaotic.Oneof
mylearningsthisquarteristhatIneedtosolidifymyclassroommanagementinordertoconducttheambitious
projectsthatareapartofSTEMinstruction.AnotherlearningisthatIneedtohavemoredialoguewithbothteachers
andparentsaboutourclassroomhappeningsandexplainthevalueofSTEMactivities.Withthatbackdrop,below
pleasefindmyrevisedgoals.

Goal#1:IwanttoimprovemyteachingpracticebybecomingadistinguishedandeffectiveSTEMteacher,as
definedbytheCPSFrameworkforTeaching.

Goal#2:IwanttoimprovecommunicationswithmyinternalandexternalaudiencesaboutthevalueofSTEM,
particularlythecreationofaMakerspaceenvironment.

Goal#3:Iwanttointegratemoretechnologyandmathactivitiesintomyinstruction.
